Mentorship means everything.  Particularly in heart surgery. I’m 55 years old. I started working with Dr. David Latter (far right) when I was 30. That means for almost 45% of my life he has been my mentor, friend, colleague, partner and more at St Michael's Hospital and University of Toronto. It started in the operating room — learning the craft of heart surgery. But what stayed with me even more was his quiet leadership, humanity, and the way he always shines the light on others. His philosophy was infectious. In this photo from our fireside chat last night you see three generations: • Dr. Latter — the mentor • me in the middle — still learning • Shubh Patel — medical student, class president, and future heart surgeon In cardiac surgery mentorship is everything. This is a craft. Someone has to teach you the trade. Every day I still try to be the kind of surgeon — and person — that David Latter has been.
