@sgodofsk I agree but having casually looked at his own X accounts for videos to the contrary, I think he intentionally plays down religion on the political stage except when it's loudly liberal

There's this idea among center-left dems that the "religious white guy" is electable but don't realize that the certain "religious white guy" who's a solid dem is not the same species.

In 2022, James Talarico said it’s “existential” to reduce meat consumption to fight climate change. "I am proud to say that our campaign has officially become a non-meat campaign... We are only buying vegan products from our local vegan businesses."

@fakedansavage Uh oh. You're being hoisted on your own petard, Dan. Opening the door to this "trans" nonsense has reached gay men who aren't attracted to women...what do you do when a female on testosterone insists she's a man and that gay men need to consider her as a partner?

@apralky The Iran kerfuffle could literally lead to human extinction but everyone is focusing on the strait of Hormuz. Next flu season the virus could mutate and literally kill us all but no one is talking about that either. Every article should be about how we could all literally die.

It is kind of interesting: the East Coast magazine types are seemingly intelligent people, seemingly selected through very tight funnels -- great universities, great SAT scores, they can often think critically, follow long and established traditions of thought, etc. but here we are moving at breakneck pace through this unprecedented technological revolution which by any reasonable consensus has decent odds of literally ending biological life as we know it in all sorts of horrible ways, and all they can think about is that... prose is getting kinda worse on the way? That some writing sounds a little sloppier now? That they are not fans of the style? This is somehow their elephant in the room? What? Is this just what happens when you compound bad epistemic habits for decades? Functional paralysis in otherwise sane minds?

@RevDerrickS @jblairsanders ...Saying that any view other than a complete ban on abortion is heretical is a product of the age. Talarico is expressing this view at the wrong point in history to be accepted by conservatives. Meanwhile, you will probably be called a heretic in 50 years by your successors.

@RevDerrickS @jblairsanders And that happened because of the salience of abortion as a modern political issue and the Protestants deciding to align with the Catholics, not because the historical writings changed. These things are decided by group preference more than principle...

@RevDerrickS @jblairsanders No, I would not, and I don't know why you think it is "clear." It's interesting that the Holy Spirit only guided the Protestants to a clear and unequivocal understanding of abortion in the last few decades. I guess we'll see what other wisdom is overturned later this century.

@NixORiley @jblairsanders Would you say that those who supported slavery from the pulpit were heretics? At the time they were not thought so by many, yet clearly they are. The same applies to your 1970’s example

@RevDerrickS @jblairsanders There is no "church teaching" as such in protestantism, but I'm sure you know that there was a diversity of views on abortion as recently as the 70s among conservative Christians, and evangelicals who supported legal abortion, like W.A. Criswell, were not considered heretics.

@jblairsanders What scripture affirms sexual sin or affirms abortion as Talarico does? Show me one time in history that Talarico’s views on homosexuality and abortion have been church teachings… you can’t because they don’t exist. But, do go on with “but Trump”

@asymmetricinfo @Scholars_Stage I do think non-Christian liberals enjoy using people like Talarico to taunt conservative Christians and suggest they don't understand their religion, but that's a different thing.

@asymmetricinfo @Scholars_Stage Do you really think the average secular voter is so naive that they don't understand that evangelicals don't see very liberal Christians as real Christians?

Educated Dems keep falling in love with candidates--Kerry, Walz, Talarico--whose bios code conservative-friendly *to educated Dems*. They cannot see distinctions that are extremely visible to the folks they're trying to appeal to, or even imagine such distinctions exist.
Sean T at RCP@SeanTrende

Yes, Talarico is a devout Christian attending a seminary, and that genuinely does help, but he's a quite liberal variant of a Christian, and evangelicals will know *exactly* what going to a PCUSA seminary means. Again, can win. But his issues are deeper than just "Texas=red."

@SeanTrende He is obviously a non starter for almost all evangelicals, but I think he may appeal to *some* mainline Protestants that sometimes vote Republican, though at the end of the day that's a single digit percentage of the population

I think this is the big asterisk on Talarico. He sort of fulfils a lot of white liberals' West Wing fantasy of someone who can just talk sense into those darned conservatives. But he's *really* liberal, including on cultural issues, and in ways (2018) Beto wasn't.
Latinx Adjacent Doctor PhD@TonerousHyus

I think it’s clear a lot of Talarico bros have no idea he stood up in front of the Texas house and tried to stop a bill banning trans men from competing in women’s sports And during this he said God is non binary and trans children are beautiful It’s a R+14 state guys

If you claim to be a "Christian" and characterize as "spewing hatred" any opposition to "gay marriage" and the whole array of legislation that promotes coercive acceptance not only of homosexual practice but also of transgenderism with all its dangers to minors and women, you are also charging Jesus with "spewing hatred," whether you realize it or not, since there is zero chance that Jesus would have embraced any of these immoral policies in first-century Palestine. In fact, there never lived anybody who applied a more rigorous moral logic to God's intentional design of two and only two sexual counterparts and God's foundational male-female requirement for sexual relations and marriage. Jesus was all-in on these matters. A word to the wise: Accusing Jesus of "spewing hatred" over such matters is not a good look when it comes time for Jesus to judge the living and the dead.
