Grace Tame claimed in an interview with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation that reports of young women being raped by Hamas during the October 7 attacks on Israel were “propaganda” and had been “debunked.” That is an extraordinary claim. Multiple investigations and reports following the October 7 attacks have documented credible allegations of sexual violence committed during those events. Dismissing those reports outright as propaganda risks trivialising serious allegations of rape and sexual assault. Regardless of anyone’s political position on the broader conflict, allegations of sexual violence deserve to be treated with seriousness and care. Public figures should be particularly cautious before declaring such claims “debunked,” especially where credible reporting and ongoing investigations indicate otherwise. That standard is even more important when the claim is made by someone who publicly presents themselves as a campaigner against rape and violence toward young women. Dismissing allegations of sexual violence in this way risks undermining the very principles such advocacy is supposed to defend. She is a hypocrite.
