STATEMENT FROM THE LABOUR PARTY
LABOUR PARTY DISTRIBUTES FREE FORMS, TO FIELD CANDIDATES ACROSS ALL POSITIONS
A Press Conference by the National Chairman of Labour Party, Barr. Julius Abure in Abuja on Monday, the 18th of May, 2026.
Gentlemen of the Press, you are welcome to this all important Press Conference by the Labour Party being the first of such after the January 21st Appeal Court judgement against our leadership.
Nigerians should recall that when the court of Appeal delivered judgment on the 21st of April, 2026 on the Labour Party crisis, our leadership stated clearly that the party will be heading to the Supreme Court. I am happy to announce that we have filed our notice of appeal, and that we are waiting for the compilation of our records so that we can properly file our brief in the Supreme Court.
It is pertinent at this point to put the records straight, due to the misconception that is associated with the story of Labour Party in some sections of the media, which are clearly incorrect and hugely misrepresenting the facts of the matter. What is happening to the party presently is a clear case of victimisation aftermath of the role we played in the 2023 general election.
Labour Party was marked for decimation and possible annihilation but unfortunately, those who were the beneficiaries of that hugely successful political action are today the ones being used as protagonists and point men to carry out the execution of the plot against the party.
It is important to note that the current leadership of the Labour Party, the Abure led executive, emerged through the National Convention held on the 27th of March, 2024 at Nnewi. All the reports from the convention as required by the law were submitted to the INEC and were all accepted, only for INEC to come up in August 2024, five months after, to say that the tenure of the executive has expired,
There were no justifiable reasons for INEC's volte-face and ironically, one would have expected all those we have elected to team up with the leadership to resist INEC and confront them with the fact on ground but instead, they proceeded to set up a caretaker committee that eventually created faction in the party.
In any event, we went to court and the Federal High Court by Justice Nwite stated clearly that the convention that brought our executive was in line with the law and that INEC didn't have any reason not to recognize the leadership of the party and ordered INEC to recognize the leadership of the party. The court of Appeal also affirmed the judgement of the trial court. It was this matter that Nenadi Usman and co appealed against, and the Supreme Court stated clearly that issues of leadership are an internal affairs of the party.
From that time to January, 2026, we have been running the party, working closely with INEC, until on the 21st of January when Justice Peter Lifu pronounced as stated that Nenadi Usman was the chairman of the party. How he arrived at that and made that flip-flop is still surprising to us. This was what resulted in the appeal and the Court of Appeal regrettably affirmed that decision.
Because of the injustice involved and because our action will enhance the legal jurisprudence in Nigeria, we want to see what the Supreme Court will say in line with what was said before and now. This is what has given us the courage to say that we are going to the Supreme Court.
In any event, Labour Party under our leadership will participate FULLY in the 2027 elections. Our forms are available and aspirants have been picking forms. All our forms can be accessed in all the Labour Party social and online platforms, for free. Just download, fill them and submit to our state chairmen across the nation.
While our governorship and state Houses of Assembly primaries will hold on Wednesday May 27th 2026, the House of Representatives and the Senate primaries will hold on Friday May 29th, 2026. All exercises will be through direct primaries which will take place at the Local Government headquarters of the party. A presidential candidate will emerge through a consensus arrangement on Friday May 29th, 2026 in a presidential primaries which will hold in Abuja.
You may want to know why we have chosen to participate fully for this coming election in spite of the Appeal Court ruling. Of course, you are aware that for anyone to participate in a pre-election matter, you must have participated in all the processes leading to the primaries including buying of nomination forms and observation all INEC regulations. As a result, we have encouraged all our members across the country who have interest in running for elective offices to pick up the necessary form for FREE so that they can participate and be part of the process. This decision is informed by the fact that all that Nenadi Usman and co have done are purely illegal. The notice they wrote to INEC was illegal, in the sense that only NEC of a party can approve and fix dates for congresses and primaries.
You will recall that they did not hold any NEC before publishing their intention to embark on congresses and primaries and INEC wrote them informing them of the illegality of their action. When they eventually called for a NEC, it never formed quorum as they alienated a significant constituents of the NEC including the state chairmen and secretaries. These chairmen and secretaries have since taken action and sacked the Nenadi executive and have also sued the executive, a matter which is still pending in the court.
Everything they have done or purported to be doing is illegal because you can't put something on nothing and expect it to stand. Therefore, we expect that all they have done with respect to the nomination of candidates will be null and void. That is why our members, the true Labour Party members need to participate in the ongoing exercise and produce their candidates across Nigeria. We have therefore chosen to ensure through our Free forms initiative, to enfranchise them to participate in the coming general election and the result has been massive and encouraging.
To further make some clarifications, our Free Form Initiative is in line with the philosophy and ideology of the Labour Party. This is to make partisan politics easy and affordable for those who have the capacity to win elections but may not have the huge funds to deploy into the contest. This will not be the first time that the Labour Party will be doing it. We did it in the 2022/23 general election and that was why Okada riders and palm kernel crushers won seats in the National Assembly.
Also, Nigerians will recall that January this year, we had announced that our forms should be issued FREE of charge for those who will attend our mentorship programs. A party like the Labour Party should not charge an exorbitant price for their forms. We are shocked that Nenadi Usman and her fellow usurpers are strangulating aspirants with high fees. Though they are strangers to the Labour Party, we expect them to go back and learn the philosophy and ideology of the Labour Party
We also need to make it very clear that a lot of misconception has been spreading, probably deliberately, that the leadership of the Labour Party requested huge sums of money from Abia state governor, Dr. Alex Otti in order to reconcile. We need to make it categorically clear that the meeting we had with His Excellency, Governor Otti was purely for reconciliation and how to forge ahead but that meeting produced no headway because the governor refused to give an inch to his earlier recalcitrant stand, insisting that all the structure of the party must be dissolved. The terms of our proposal to him are as follows.
One, to share the positions in the NWC; Two, to take his governorship ticket and produce all the state House of Assembly candidates including all the candidates for House of Representatives and Senate in Abia state; and Three, to produce any other governorship, House of Representatives and Senatorial candidates in other states where he might have interest. We further conceded the offices of the National Secretary and other key national offices. But with all these sacrifices from the leadership, the Governor declined all the proposals and insisted that already all positions in the NWC have been filled, by him. While offering to us the Vice Chairman and Secretary of the Board of Trustees.
At no time was the issue of money discussed. Nobody made any financial requests and nobody offered any money to anyone. We are therefore calling on all party members and supporters to disregard those fake news which sources are not too difficult to decipher.
Our leadership will not rest until we recover our party from some political buccaneers and merchants who will stop at nothing until the soul of the party is completely destroyed. We believe that the Supreme Court will do justice to the matter, and until then, we will continue to carry out our responsibilities entrusted on us by the March 27, 2024 convention of the party in Nnewi.
Sign.
Barr. Julius Abure
National Chairman
Labour Party
18th of May, 2026.

Last night, I was deeply shocked and saddened to hear about the kidnapping and gruesome murder of my dear friend and ally, Hon. Abba Anas Adamu of Jigawa State.
I was informed that Abba Anas was among those abducted in the worsening wave of insecurity, kidnappings, and killings that continue to plague our country, particularly across Northern Nigeria and even parts of the South. I was told that while travelling with his colleagues, they were kidnapped, and that even after the ransom demanded was paid, he was still brutally killed. The news left me devastated and heartbroken at the tragic and painful manner in which such a good man lost his life.
Hon. Abba Anas Adamu was not just a political associate; he was a friend and brother to me since our days together in the House of Representatives around 2007.
During the political turbulence that followed President Yar’Adua’s illness and the succession crisis, I led a group of patriotic Nigerians in the House of Representatives under the platform of the Nigeria First Forum. For strategic reasons, I appointed Abba Anas to chair the team, and alongside other committed patriots, he worked tirelessly across ethnic and regional lines in the national interest.
Patriots like Hon. Abba Anas defied all odds, inducement, intimidation and blackmail. I arranged another patriot, Hon Dr. Sani Abdu from Bauchi, then of the ANPP, to move the motion for President Jonathan to be made Acting President. Hon. Abba Anas was the one who seconded the motion while I contributed four times on that day. Hon. Dino Melaye's shirt got torn on the floor of the House. Some others involved in that patriotic effort have since gone to be with their Maker, like Hon. Bethel Amadi and Hon. Independence Ogunewe, while others are still alive. Now, Abba Anas has joined them. May God bless their souls.
Together, we fought to ensure the emergence of what later became known as the Doctrine of Necessity, which ultimately paved the way for President Goodluck Jonathan to ascend to the Presidency.
At the time, I had the honour of nominating Abba Anas for a ministerial position, though unfortunately it did not materialise due to local opposition. Because of his principled stand and commitment to that national cause, he lost political support back home and could not return to the House. Yet, throughout the years, our bond only grew stronger.
When I became Governor, Abba Anas remained by my side, and even afterwards, in my service in the Senate, he continued to stand with me until his death. We were truly like brothers.
Even in the formation of the NDC, Abba Anas was among the original members of the team that conceptualised the movement. He was expected to play a leading role in the leadership of the party, but due to political realities and delays, he eventually found himself in the ADC. Despite that, we remained close, worked together continuously, and compared notes regularly.
It was therefore a terrible shock yesterday evening when our mutual friend and colleague, Hon. (Dr.) Sani Abdu, called me in tears to ask if I had heard the news. I was stunned. It was only afterwards that I confirmed the heartbreaking development from numerous callers across the country who called to notify me, knowing our closeness.
On behalf of my family, my constituents, and our wide circle of friends and associates across the country, I extend our deepest condolences to his family, his wives, children, associates, and all who were close to him.
In the passing of Hon. Abba Anas Adamu, Nigeria has lost a patriot. We have lost a friend, a brother, and a committed nationalist. Personally, I have lost a loyal ally, confidant, and brother.
What makes this loss even more painful is the cruel and tragic manner in which he died.
I pray that Almighty God grants his family, loved ones, and all of us the strength and fortitude to bear this painful loss, and grant his soul eternal rest.

MY SPEECH AS THE NATIONAL LEADER OF THE NDC AT OUR INAUGURAL NATIONAL CONVENTION HELD TODAY
“First, they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they attack you, and then you win.” — Mahatma Gandhi
My fellow compatriots, leaders, and delegates.
I join the National Chairman and members of the Protem National Executive Committee to warmly welcome you all to our nation’s capital and to this historic venue for our inaugural national convention.
Today, I address you with a deep sense of honour, gratitude, and responsibility as we gather for a convention whose primary purpose is to affirm and elect our protem national leadership and further strengthen the foundation of our great party.
I use this opportunity to sincerely thank Nigerians from all walks of life for the trust and confidence they have reposed in me and in the leaders of our party, believing in the ideals upon which the NDC was founded — ideals of service, national unity and cohesion, political inclusion, women and youth empowerment, and the protection of democratic values.
As you all know, this party is barely three months old, yet no political party in the history of our country has enjoyed this level of acceptance, enthusiasm, and trust from Nigerians within such a short period of time as the NDC has received.
You will recall that, in our collective effort to establish an alternative opposition platform that would keep the flames of Nigeria’s multi-party democracy alive, we first sought to register this party as far back as 2017, when I realised that the foundations of my party—the PDP, had been weakened and the ideals compromised. Unfortunately, that effort did not materialise at the time.
However, when INEC resumed party registration last year, we revisited and updated our earlier application. Even then, when we encountered bureaucratic bottlenecks that violated our constitutional right to freedom of association, we approached the courts, and in December 2025, judgment was delivered in our favour. That judgment was duly served on INEC, which complied and issued us our certificate of registration in February this year.
Following that, I publicly announced my involvement and role in this great party, and we immediately commenced nationwide mobilisation and sensitisation. Since then, Nigerians from every region of our country, North, South, East, and West, have embraced and shared in our vision.
I thank the Judiciary for upholding our constitutional rights to freedom of association in the judgment at the Federal High Court that led to the registration of our party. I equally commend INEC and its Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, who obeyed the court judgements in respect of the NDC and the NDP, which was registered later.
While INEC and the judiciary did well in the case of NDC and NDP, they should also do well to ensure the survival of multi-party democracy—the survival of PDP, ADC, Labour Party, SDP, NNPP, and all other opposition parties. Nigeria needs a strong party in government and also strong parties in opposition.
Let me say that, contrary to propaganda, there is no appeal against the judgement by INEC or by anyone. The judgment has been obeyed and implemented fully, and besides, the timeline for appeal has since passed, and only INEC has the proper locus standi, and they have not appealed.
About a week ago, two influential figures in our nation’s political history, His Excellency Peter Obi and His Excellency Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, officially joined our party after weeks of consultations and engagements with me. I thank them specially for their trust, confidence, and partnership, both in the journey so far and in the journey ahead.
This partnership represents a unique convergence of political experience, administrative competence, national reach, and a shared hope for the future of Nigeria.

MY SPEECH AT THE NDC NATIONAL CONVENTION
09 MAY 2026
FCT, ABUJA
Fellow Nigerians,
It is with immense pleasure and a deep sense of fulfilment that I address you today on this historic occasion of the National Convention of our great party, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), in Abuja.
Since we joined this party, together with numerous stakeholders, millions of supporters, and well-meaning Nigerians, the NDC has continued to attract quality members and ignite enthusiastic conversations among citizens and observers both at home and abroad. What began as a bold movement is steadily becoming a formidable platform for national renewal.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Nigeria stands at a critical crossroads. The world is undergoing a profound geopolitical shift, yet our nation has been caught unprepared, largely because of poor leadership. Instead of positioning Nigeria to seize emerging opportunities, bad governance has left us bearing the brunt of global changes.
We are witnessing a sharp decline in the quality of life. Insecurity has created widows and orphans across the land. Millions have been displaced from their homes. Investments are fleeing, critical infrastructure is neglected, the education system is collapsing, and harsh economic policies have been imposed on citizens without meaningful safety nets or relief.
Yet Nigeria’s history teaches us that in our most challenging moments, visionary alliances have provided the way forward. In 1954, a historic partnership was formed between the Northern Elements Progressive Union (NEPU), led by Aminu Kano and the National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons (NCNC), led by Nnamdi Azikiwe to achieve national unity.
Again, in 1960, against steep odds, Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe’s National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons (NCNC) formed a coalition with the Northern People’s Congress (NPC) to birth our independence.
In the Second Republic, the alliance between Shehu Shagari and Alex Ekwueme under the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) helped restore civilian rule and national unity after years of military dictatorship.
It is therefore with great sense of unity and solidarity, that as a loyal party member, I support the decision to zone the presidential ticket of the NDC to the South, so that it allows the region to complete its turn in producing national leadership.
This represents a true opportunity for true national healing. We shall work in abidance with the party’s agreement to ensure fairness and federal character in all ramifications.
This party shall also ensure to change the way things are done today by prioritising leadership without ethnic jingoism and religious favouritism.
The leadership standard we shall set will therefore restore Nigeria’s dignity and will guarantee that our citizens at home and the diaspora will be treated with respect and dignity.
Lastly, we can only achieve that by continuing to mobilise to register with INEC to vote, and the NDC to belong to this noble cause. Please register, today.
Thank you.
Long Live the Nigeria Democratic Congress!
Long Live the Federal Republic of Nigeria!
Sen Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, PhD, FNSE
Former Governor, Kano State
