@PoThePerson @JackHadders Which field of engineering and are they in the oil or weapons industry? That's about as much as I could hope for in Civil Engineering and even then probably as a director more than as an engineer...

I went to a career day for sixth form students a few years ago. The other engineer I was paired up with was in his 50s. One of the kids asked how much we both made. He went first and said 130k After that I was very sheepish about saying my number, which was a lot less. I had no idea that engineers could make that much until he said that.

The latest third world poverty Britain update just dropped on Reddit today. £50-60K is considered an unobtainable, “crazy high” salary, coming from someone who appears to be studying for a Masters and working in STEM. Pay up PAYE piggy, you’ve got another Somalian to house!

@MercuriusFilius I assume J.P Morgan wouldn't lack for people who would work out 50%. So I have got to assume the question wants you to pick up the effect of exponential growth and address it.

@LostHistory9 Main thing is when you realise Peter Jackson doesnt know how to film and end to a battle. Every major battle, in both LotR and Hobbit basically ends X arriving and yeeting the enermy army in 30 sec.

High King Fëanor - Alpha Chad of Middle-earth
While the Battle of the Pelennor Fields in the films is a great visual spectacle, and Bernard Hill's performance during his speech is quite good, can we all acknowledge some basic facts about this battle as a whole? Both times Theoden charged it made him look like a complete moron. Moreso the second charge than the first. There's a reason Tolkien wrote it the way he did. Should've stuck to the books on that one. Karl Urban was flat out robbed from portraying one of if not the most epic scene from Eomer in the books. The deus ex machina Army of the Dead showing up at Minas Tirith completely ruined the tension of the battle, and quite honestly, it looked goofy. Last, but certainly not least, having the Witch-king overpower Gandalf is something they shouldn't have done. There was no need for it. It isn't canon, and Gandalf canonically is much more powerful than the leader of the Nazgul.

@AcademicAgent_X Deformation is much harder in the USA, especially for public figures. (See NYT vs Sullivan). Even if they prove Bridget is a women, doesnt mean they prove actual malice and knowledge of the falsity (amongst other requirements)

@AcademicAgent_X With alot of commentator's, like say the lotus eaters, I wonder why they havnt at least gone to China for a bit, just to see what it's like. Go see the fake cities for themselves and report back. Or check thier actual laws. Everything seems to just be recieved knowledge.

@lporiginalg This really overlooks what the Mongolians did in the 13th century. Islam lost as much, if not more, than Europe lost with Rome in 1258 at Baghdad. So I doubt anywhere outside of Europe, other than maybe China could talk like this and not come across as a clown.

@AcademicAgent_X Depends on the industry safe guards I imagine. In Civil engineering they seem as good as when I started, at most they are somewhat behind on social skills. They hate ringing you in their first year and asking questions or for help...

@Onkelmormor12 @Sargon_of_Akkad The Roman Republic fell in around 27 BC ,before Christ, let along Islam. You are thinking of the western Roman Empire. The reasons the Republic fell are diffrent (and in parts similar) to the empire 500 years later. Carl is talking about the Republic for precious reasons.

@Sargon_of_Akkad Another reason for the fall of the Roman Republic is simply warfare. Fighting wars on several fronts against powerful opponents tire out your forces. The Roman Republic simply lacked the forces to respond against Islam after all their other campaigns.

Dispossessing native workers and replacing them with cheaper foreigners was one of the core reasons for the fall of the Roman Republic, by the way.

@OGRolandRat Quite a lot in the tech sector such as apps etc. They had (and have) a fair amount the west doesn't realise because it's in Chinese. You (and the Lotus Eaters) probably need to go over to actually see for yourselves.

Are there any cases of China being first to market or dominating in a NEW industry? That is, I'm looking for any examples where China has not just leeched off existing tech and industry and simply "done it cheaper".

@PoorPeazant @OGRolandRat I am an engineer. Thier steel is as good as anyone else. They now manufacture planes for Airbus and they easily manufacture structural steel to ISO. The thing to understand with China is that they send us what we pay for.

@OGRolandRat Do you know why Chinese steel is disparaged and not allowed to be used by some jurisdictions? It isn't protectionism. It is metallurgically inconsistent and doesn't meet ASTM standards. You have plenty of engineers in your audience, ask them if you don't believe me.

The Chinese are legitimately brilliant builders and engineers, especially building on or between large mountains. This cannot be denied, much incredible footage.
