Raising well-behaved kids is hard work, but here are four things that can make it a lot easier: 1. Making sure they get enough sleep 2. Feeding them well balanced meals 3. Limiting screen time as much as possible 4. Getting them outside to play and exercise

growing up Mormon I always said it was great to have a living prophet to address the challenges of the day. I still think it's a good idea for a religion, but Mormons have added maybe three meaningful updates in 150 years while the Pope just put out a detailed AI encyclical.

i guess tonal languages have to have words to signify all of the things that atonal languages use intonation for, like sarcasm or whether something is a question. it must be confusing for speakers to learn a language like english and find that there are no words to signify this stuff.

Sadly, the Amadeus TV series on Starz just doesn't have the same greatness of the film.
The costuming is outstanding, there's solid acting, too, especially from Bettany and Sharpe. But it's still not Abraham and Hulce.

There's a few constructs that signal a question is being asked that happen in the beginning/middle/end of a sentence instead of using 嗎 at the end.
怎麼 = How?
誰 = Who?
那裡 = Where?
為什麼 = Why?
什麼 = What?
是不是 = Is or is not? (This one is actually almost a whole continent as all verbs can use it (see or not, said or not, run or not, etc).
If any of those are used, 嗎 isn't used. 嗎 actually works only in their absence, as a way of ensuring a statement is turned into a query.
"You are in Taiwan."
你在台灣.
You are in Taiwan?"
你在台灣嗎?
Are you in Taiwan?
你在不在台灣? （Note, no 嗎).

huh cool. i had definitely assumed that something like anger/agitation would come thru just fine. my baby angry babbles sometimes—it seems like tone signaling emotion is a deep and innate human quality.
but i hadn’t realized that something like the words to signify a question aren’t always used. i can’t quite make sense of the example you gave of this, how is a question being signaled here?

I can't visualize faces, or descriptions of room setups or outdoor scenery in books.
When movie adaptations show me those thing I feel relief.
