@tracewoodgrains “Does common sense policy that is easy to understand on TV” is such a rare superpower it’s the only thing in the country that can actually transcend ideology.

Local minima are extremely rare in high dimensional spaces, so if you ever feel stuck in a rut it’s probably just because you aren’t considering a wide enough set of orthogonal options

@rBillSimmonsPod Klay Thompson. Businesslike. Not a ton of range but what he does always plays and he can get hot. Low mistake player, team-first attitude. Loves to win. He’s even got the “does lots of self-aware shit but also seems weird and also somehow seems boring” energy for me.

The secret to not being awkward is to never force conversation. Don’t try to come up with interesting things to say, don’t talk to people for the sake of talking, don’t voice opinions or ask questions to sound smart. Instead, notice your own curiosity and follow it. If you don’t have any, radiate comfort in your silence.

@connorrmccarthy @WillManidis I am not here to defend Orny Adams, who seemed mentally ill in that documentary and I hope has gotten better since then. But I think Seinfeld is putting us on, and the fact that he was never kicking around at 35 still trying to get the break is instrumental to his attitude.

@OGWiseman @WillManidis That Seinfeld strives to expand the reach of his art isn’t hypocritical. His goal is obviously to perform for as many eyeballs as possible. The money flows from there. The whole point is that the target is different. Not that he isnt striving for success.

@connorrmccarthy @WillManidis Like imagine a world where Seinfeld is not allowed to do anything that more than 50 people see, ever. New law. Is he still going to tiny clubs and grinding on a new set just for the joy of it? Preposterous!

@connorrmccarthy @WillManidis Don’t agree with the last sentence. If “just keep working” is what matters, why do a huge doc about building your set? Why promote “comedians in cars” so heavily? Just work!

@OGWiseman @WillManidis I’m not saying that he didn’t try hard to be world famous. And the fact that he promoted himself like that for 50 years even after being wildly famous and wealthy is a point towards my theory, not yours.

@connorrmccarthy @WillManidis Yes, I think he’s faking that and in fact Jerry Seinfeld was/is *desperate* to be a World Famous Comedian. He’s made savvy format decisions and promoted the absolute fuck out of himself for 50 years. He didn’t have to do that to keep working.

@OGWiseman @WillManidis The point is not that the wildly successful do not grind or strive; it’s that they don’t view it as grinding or striving. Getting to do the work is the reward for him. So it’s not grinding to a goal or striving for an outcome. It’s about doing it well so he can do more of it.

If I told you I'd give you $1 million for correctly picking the winner of any major award this year, what would be your pick? (You can't pick Wemby DPOY)

@Luke898988 @Three_Cone If they bring Harper off the bench this year (they won’t) they’re fucking morons, he’s their second best player already.

@Three_Cone Probably Harper 6moty if he comes off the bench? Also could see Ajay Mitchell winning it.

@Three_Cone No easy answers but possibly Wemby mvp. 😬 If he qualifies they’re gonna be desperate to give it to him. If I had to pick ROY probably Wilson, he’s gonna have every chance to be a real guy and he seems eager.

@mattyglesias @amandalitman Hardly anyone talks about guns or climate change or defunding the cops anymore matt. What else? Do you want them to more transphobic than the actual population?

One million percent. I think it comes from a combo of things -- financial incentives (consultants seeking profit or people satisfying donors, or both), anxiety about being seen as wrong by your peers, & a deep internalization of the stakes & consequences (which is fair, but also, fear is not a great excuse!)
Pat Dennis@patdennis

There is a pervasive anti-risk-taking psychology in Democratic Party institutions. You see it reflected in the way we post, the way we govern, and in what we'll allow ourselves to strive for electorally. Spreadsheet conservatism -- like the worst possible risk is being wrong

@slavakozlov @WillManidis Yeah I mean I think they’re arguing that decision reveals a mindset of just doing the work no matter what, but it strikes me more as a lack of adversity!

@OGWiseman @WillManidis Yeah the essay seems to have missed Seinfeld’s whole character. Not only was he grinding when he went on the Tonight Show, he was grinding after his massive hit. He didn’t make a show about his expensive cars like a certain comedian, he went to (almost) open mike nights

@the_sigh_op2 @WillManidis That doesn’t seem responsive to what I said—couldn’t he have driven before that? But insofar as he was instantly successful, then I even more disagree that there’s any meaningful contrast between him and a guy like Adams. “Just work” is easy to say when you’ve never failed!

@OGWiseman @WillManidis Jerry was probably rich before his sitcom even shot a pilot. He appeared on Carson 10 times in the '80s and was a top stand-up by the end of the decade.

@visakanv Once you’re training though, a version of this actually does work. If you do interval training and run really fast for some of it, it makes running slower require less heart bpm, for example. If you run long and slow it can increase your sustainable speed in shorter distances.

when i was about 20 years old, i did a half-marathon without training, thinking it would at least make shorter runs subsequently feel easier. it did not achieve this effect whatsoever. in hindsight i realize this was an intellectual misunderstanding of bodily experience

The subtext of this is that Lu Dort was still a valuable basketball player and was not traded for basketball reasons, and he deserves to hear that from us. Glad Presti said it.

Sam Presti to @Justintohoops: “This was a financial decision. The impression I have been given is that the savings generated this summer, and from being out of the tax the last several years, will be re-allocated to future teams.” oklahoman.com/story/sports/n…
