@FemiOlawole@AKakanfo Ijaiye in Egbaland is a big town divided into kunmi, obirinti and kukudi but that of ibadan was the one not rebuilt according to your own history but heard still existing.
Incidentally, history has no respect for ancestral sentiments. Otherwise, many of us would have taken up arms against it for recording negative things about our progenitors or ancestral villages.
History told us that at the onset, the trio of Atiba, Oluyole, and Kurunmi were military colleagues and very close friends. When Atiba informed the two of his wish to ascend the throne of the Alaafin, they agreed. Upon their agreement, Oluyole was made the Basorun (succeeded by Ibikunle upon his death) while Kurunmi became the Aare Ona Kakanfo.
Shortly afterward, Kurunmi complained to Oluyole about his opposition to Atiba's becoming the Alaafin. But Oluyole felt it would amount to a betrayal if they went against Atiba now after they had earlier agreed with him on the deal. Despite Oluyole's counsel, Kurunmi continued to harbor illfeelings toward Atiba.
The issue of stopping the ugly tradition of having heir commit suicide upon the demise of an Alaafin was just an excuse Kurunmi saw in dealing with Atiba.
How could anyone in the 21st Century now argue that even if Aare Kurunmi was wiser than Alaafin Atiba (with whom he had a long-standing feud), was he also wiser than the invited Timi of Ede and some other kings from the neighboring towns? Was he wiser than all the Oyomesi put-together, the Ogboni collective, and, indeed, the Ifa Oracle that seriously warned him against the unwarranted antagonism?
Yes, Aare Kurunmi was a valiant war hero, but history is replete with heroes who later turned villains after overreaching themselves. Was Aare Afonja too, not once a war hero of the Oyo Empire?
And by the way, where is Ijaye now? It would have been one of the biggest towns in Egba land by now. But the community was deliberately razed to the grounds and not allowed to be rebuilt because of Kurunmi!
Remembering Famous Balogun (Generals) of Yoruba Land.
1. Balogun Oderinlo of Ibadan – Conquered the Fulanis in Osogbo.
2. Balogun Ibikunle of Ibadan - defeated the treacherous Aare Ona Kakanfo Kurumi of Ijaye.
3. Balogun Akere of Ibadan – died while fighting against the Ijesha army in the Kiriji war.
4. Balogun Orowusi of Ibadan - defeated the Ijesha army.
5. Balogun Ogunbona of Egba land - conquered the Dahomey army.
6. Balogun Osungboekun of Ibadan - replaced Latoosa in the Ekiti Parapo/Kiriji war.
7. Balogun Olasile of Ijaye – served and died with his boss, Aare Ona Kakanfo Kurumi.
8. Balogun Singusee of Ile Ife - conquered the old Owu town.
10. Balogun Kuku of Ijebu land – 1st Balogun to fight against the British.
11. Balogun Ajikobi of Ilorin – fought against Alaafin Oluewu and the Oba Ibariba. But he was later caught as a prisoner of war while fighting alongside the side of Fulanis at the battle of Osogbo war. He was then taken to Oyo, where he was mercilessly sprayed with bullets until he died.
