Blue needs 50% of the WHOLE, including red votes, to not die. You can call them dumb for voting blue but that does not take away the fact that you are acting against blue when you vote red.

The red button is essentially the "kill blue if they reach less than 50%" button. by pressing red you are actively trying to kill blue. It does have consequence.

Pressing red is choosing the "if less than 50% of people chose blue blue dies" button. It don't make it better if they're not crippled or over 18.

If a building is burning and someone is trapped inside you'd stay outside if you press red, if you'd press blue you'd get inside and try to rescue them, sure you may both die but that is the risk some are willing to take.
