Phytophthora blight is definitely around. Heavy rains can splashes zoospores from the infected soil to fruits and leaves. Read the post by @OhioVeggieDoc for the guidelines about the disease management u.osu.edu/miller.769/201… I added a bit of art&craft in the last picture!

Gummy stem blight on butternut squash. The disease is not that common in North East Ohio, but with warmer weather, it might start showing up more.

Cucumber downy mildew has been confirmed in research plots at the OSU N Central Agric. Expt Station in Sandusky County, OH, and in a Sentinel plot in Wayne County. Bacterial spot was also confirmed in squash and pumpkins in the Sentinel plot. See u.osu.edu/miller.769/ for more.

Another report of downy mildew on cucumbers, this time in Wayne County, OH. Absent a prolonged dry spell, downy mildew looks to be a headache for OH cucurbit growers this season. See u.osu.edu/miller.769. Map is posted on cdm.ipmpipe.org.

Cucumber downy mildew was detected in Medina County, OH today. This is the first report in this state in 2024, corresponding to a first report in SE MI today. Management recommendations can be found at u.osu.edu/miller.769. Photo by Frank Becker.

Soon after several recent intensive rain events across OH accompanied by high temps, Phytophthora blight is severe in some pepper fields, affecting roots, stems and fruits. Pumpkins and other cucurbits have also been affected. See go.osu.edu/CdHG

Downy mildew was reported on pumpkins in Fulton County, OH, on the OH-MI border. DM also occurred on pumpkins in this county in early Aug 2022. Probably Clade 1 of the pathogen, which hasn't been reported outside the SE US yet. Interesting. go.osu.edu/CcJS

Downy mildew continues to spread in OH. No sign of it in our Sandusky County sentinel plot 12 days ago, but blew up a week later. If this was a commercial field it would be too late to rescue the crop. Powdery mildew has also arrived. See u.osu.edu/Cbs4 for more.

As expected, cucumber downy mildew has appeared in OH in three counties-Medina, Wayne and Knox- and likely more as yet unreported. Preventatively applied effective fungicides are needed to manage CDM. See go.osu.edu/Cbs4.

Popular inquiry this week: tomatoes that are pretty on the outside and brown inside. Prolonged extremely wet, overcast, humid, hot weather limits the plant's ability to move water through transpiration, which means calcium can't reach the fruit. Internal blossom end rot. #MSUext
