First southern rust of the year in Hinds County, MS. Thankfully, the vast majority of the corn in MS is beyond a stage where southern rust could impact yield @MSUExtService @MSUextPlantLab @MississippiCorn

Common rust on corn in Alabama. Not a significant problem. We still have not confirmed southern corn rust, though we have eye’s in the field. Common rust appears as powdery, elongated, brick-red to cinnamon-brown pustules that erupt on both sides of the leaves @CropNetwork

Gray leaf spot of corn occurs virtually every growing season and is often more severe in corn following corn. Disease is favored by warm (80s°F), humid (>90% for 12+ hours) weather. Severity depends on hybrid susceptibility and environment. Resistant hybrids are available. Crop rotation and tillage reduce fungus survival. Foliar fungicides are available, but are less likely to be profitable if disease risk is low. "Most fungicides resulted in greater breakeven probabilities with increasing disease severity. The results emphasize that fungicide applications occurring at VT/R1 and when disease severity exceeds 5% are more likely to result in a positive economic gain." For tar spot, fungicide timing is very important. In most years, a fungicide is not needed prior to the V10 growth stage. One well-timed (VT-R3 growth stages) fungicide will be sufficient to manage tar spot in most instances. Even in years where two applications appear to improve tar spot control, improved ROI is marginal over a single well-timed application. It is best to use scouting and/or tar spot risk or profit tools to make informed decisions about when to apply fungicides for tar spot. Read more at cropprotectionnetwork.org/publications/f…. “More often than not, it is assumed that interveinal chlorosis indicates the presence of soybean sudden death syndrome (SDS). However, there are several additional diseases and disorders that can cause interveinal chlorosis in soybean besides SDS. Some of these diseases are new to the U.S. and Canada, or are expanding into new regions, which can complicate disease diagnosis.” From Diagnosing Interveinal Chlorosis in Soybeans — it's not just SDS at doi.org/10.31274/cpn-2… by @cropdoc08 @baldpathologist @BorisCamiletti @febina_m & @dsmuelle. @DTelenko @DylanMangel @BisonBeanDoc @badgercropdoc @MartinChilvers1 @alabamaED @MandyBish1 @maddishires @travisfaske @ppp_trey @MahDuffeck #soybean #USSoy
