A gift to anyone near Boston April 11. Incredibly, the @bosphil is performing Mahler's 3rd, which is hardly ever performed even though it is all wonderful things. The 3rd is the most majestic building, the mightiest river, the most glorious mountain, the finest dinner, the best news ever, and so on. Finished in 1896, it represents the height of civilization, the apotheosis of the Belle Epoque, finished before the composer's life became very complicated and darkened year by year. It is his longest symphony at 100 minutes, with six movements involving a huge virtuosic orchestra, and even a full boys' choir singing the most vocally clever rendering of church bells you will ever hear. The symphony is thoughtful, confident, creative, and ebullient. This is life changing stuff, and a point I cannot understand: it is entirely affordable. You can get seats for as low as $32. Amazing.
