I've been thinking... about Starship heat tiles... and how they are ready for Mars. Wait, what? How can that be? Sure, they're getting better with each flight. Fewer losses. Better attachment. Smarter materials. But there are still some problems. We've all seen the photos. So how can I say they're ready for Mars? Simple: one-way trip. Most of the first Starships that head to Mars won't be coming back. Some might crash. Some might land hard. Some will stick the landing and sit there as habitats or propellant depots. But none of those early ships returning anytime soon. This means the heat tiles only need to survive one landing. Just one. And the new V3 Starship, based on what we saw on Flight 13, looks like it can handle that. Ship 40 made it through reentry in good shape and delivered a soft splashdown. It was incredible. So why wait? Maybe it's time to send an actual one-way test flight to Mars sooner rather than later. Let's go! Excitement guaranteed. 🚀

Starship has successfully ignited one of its Raptor engines while in space, testing a maneuver that will be needed on future orbital missions

I sometimes fail to compensate for how little others know about spaceflight. This past week I’ve encountered 1. Someone who didn’t know people went to the Moon earlier this year. Not a denier, she was just literally unaware it happened. 2. Someone believing that SpaceX wasn’t going anywhere because all their rockets blow up. This person was a smart academic prominent enough to have a Wikipedia page. 3. Someone believing that space radiation made life outside of Earth literally impossible. Was surprised when I informed him of the continuous occupation of the ISS for quarter of a century. Lots of work to do.
