@CockertonMark I know a retired head teacher and his retired teacher wife who are selling a property in Europe, they’re staunch socialists and Europeans but wanted a sale that would give them cash to avoid CGT. These are the same people you’re asking to teach critical thinking!

My window cleaner always asks me to pay him in cash because ‘if it goes into his Bank Account he’ll have to pay tax on it’. Today he told me he’s a staunch Tory because ‘Labour have put taxes up’. This is why we need to teach critical thinking at school.

@THemingford They destroyed huge industries, what do you know about “Red Robbo”, “Spannish Practices” “wrong kind of toilet paper” “Arthur Lennin Scargill”. There were many reasons Mrs T took on and fought the unions, we were a laughing stock, you need to be more balanced with you views!

@AndyPHainsy Cherry picking two stats ignores the bigger picture. Inflation fell globally in the 80s. Debt fell partly due to North Sea oil. But also: unemployment hit 3m+ whole industries wiped out inequality surged You can’t call that a simple success.

The bystander at the end 😭💀 A massive Met Police operation took place in Kilburn yesterday, completely clearing the streets of uninsured mopeds, illegal electric scooters, and modified e-bikes. They literally brought a massive flatbed truck to tow them all away! 🚨🛵 While a lot of Londoners are sick of e-bikes flying down the pavements, others think the police should be focusing their resources on bigger crimes. Do you agree with this crackdown, or should they be focusing elsewhere? Let us know your thoughts below!

Labour's leasehold reforms are facing a legal setback due to 'rights to enjoy private property' as enshrined in the European Convention on Human Rights. Is there anything landlords can challenge about new RRA reforms?

@The_Landlord I looked at refinancing a property recently, the fees were over £6k, and as a landlord I can’t charge a single penny for a credit search and background checks ! Even Ryanair are allowed to charge £50.00 to allow someone can have a seat !

What's the point in mortgage lenders offering cashback on completion, why don't they just reduce the product fee?

Julia Hartley-Brewer loses it when I mention Britain had national rent controls from 1915-1988 building 300–350k homes a year. Since 1988, we built 200k a year. The Greens’ policy to reintroduce rent controls would finally let councils build again not treating housing as an asset

To set the record straight - once again - I have never minimised the importance of society, only contested the assumption that society means the State rather than other people.

@moving_charlie Because It’s ideological, not pragmatic. Under Pol Pot, landlords would’ve been class enemies — and that often meant death, I fear we are heading in that direction. It’s a Marxist policy, we know it is, and they know it is, they just don’t have the courage to admit it!

Stupidity is always a choice (unlike ignorance). Anyone calling for rent controls because they think it will help tenants is CHOOSING to ignore overwhelming evidence that it doesn't work. Choosing stupidity, making it even worse for themselves.
Callum Price@callumtprice

Quick reminder on the actual evidence on rent controls: @iealondon did a comprehensive analysis of the evidence (196 studies from around the world). The conclusion is clear: rent controls do far more damage than good, and hurt those they try to help. 🧵 (1/9)

@amsargent @landlord_secret @lee_boyce The English conveyancing system is shambolic. Unfortunately, as Westminster is dominated by lawyers, they aren’t going to do anything to fix it (would be fairly simple) because that would mean turning on their fellow lawyers!

@amsargent @landlord_secret @lee_boyce Sell up, pay 24% CGT, and not 47% income tax, remove the hassle of tenants, don’t have to take calls/texts at 10-00pm telling you a knob is lose, no more threat of £40,000 fines, SLA licence costs, more tax grab, imagine stress free living? that’s the best way forward !

@lee_boyce Interesting newsletter, tx. Big issue I've struggled with re: pensions is coz most of my income is from property that is not deemed relevant earnings and so my ability to save in a SIPPs is seriously curtailed. Any advice for me or do I have to be a landlord 4ever?

@funding4ulondon @moving_charlie Or, the government could legislate as they have done with the PRS, that like landlords, lenders are not allowed to discriminate against anyone, that would include the un-employed! Now that would be rather interesting !!

@moving_charlie Employment stability is fundamental to mortgage affordability. Sustained pressure on SMEs risks tightening lending outcomes, as income security remains a key pillar in mortgage assessments. A balanced policy approach is essential to support both job creation long-term housing

Small and medium businesses provide 60% of ALL jobs. The government must know this. It cannot not know it. Jobs are the primary requirement for anyone needing a mortgage to buy a home. The destruction of the jobs market, especially for the young, is also the destruction of people’s ability to buy a home, start a family and have a good life. Almost every new policy this government has introduced has hurt small and medium businesses, and thus their ability to create new jobs, hire more people and pay better wages. Employers NI hike. Min wage hike. Business rates hike. To name just three. It’s becoming increasingly difficult to argue against those who say this is a deliberate act. Because nobody could be so stupid as to not be able to see the first order effects (let alone second and third) of this government’s policies. It’s close to impossible to argue this isn’t deliberate destruction, because there is no other logical explanation. Even blind ideology can’t be this blind can it? Record youth unemployment, highest in Europe for the first time ever. 25% in London. For the sake of discussion, can anyone provide a reasoned, logic backed argument as to how or why this government can pursue these policies without realising it’s directly harming the largest source of jobs there is? Tony Blair’s government oversaw the fastest rise in house prices to wages ratio of the last 50 years. (From 4.5 x income when they came to power, to 7.5 x income when they left). Now this government is destroying more people’s chances of ever owning a home. (I am absolutely not defending the Tories who did nothing to help this situation, but at least didn’t accelerate it like this gov is). It’s an absolute tragedy. Yet another generation are going to be deprived of the chance of owning a modest family home and the magic of starting and raising a family. How long does this go on?

@alan_stalcup @maxdubler Landlords vs families? As a Landlord I house families, many of whom couldn’t or don’t want to buy even if supply was sufficient. Build more homes, yes — but driving landlords out just cuts supply even further and pushes rents higher. I would argue that we need both.

Someone is always going to make money on housing. The choice before us is whether public policy should make it hard to build new homes, which lets landlords get rich on housing scarcity, or whether we should let developers make money building new homes for people to live in.

@welshroots I went to one of the toughest, roughest schools in Leeds, those pics were my childhood, those were my streets. My old school has turned out a significant amount of very successful people, people from those streets, it’s much more nuanced than the story you’re trying to portray!

If only Nigel Farage had been born into a poor family in the late sixties how different life for him would have been !!! Born to a Rich Stockbroker with a private education he has no idea about what it feels to be hungry and surely he and his avid Top Brass would have a different attitude to 2 Child Cap nearly all the bloody lot of them born with SILVER SPOON in their GOBS
