Jonathan Rose’s 2001 study, based on some 2000 working-class autobiographies, library records and archives, shows that (roughly between the advent of 19th C education reforms and the mid-century arrival of television), weavers at mills were reading Milton while butlers and maids were reading Proust.

This is a very important point. Some volunterism can be somewhat impactful (flying a lot is probably worth worrying about), but the vast majority is pointless. As long as states rule, they have to fix.

If this is really how a former MI6 chief understands Russia, it’s both worrying and helps explain why British policy towards Moscow has failed so spectacularly over the past couple of decades. A kleptocracy would obviously seek to preserve access to money, assets and foreign markets and not deliberately invite sanctions and decades of lost wealth. So why would it have bothered with Crimea in 2014, which triggered everything that happened subsequently? Russia may have serious long-running corruption issues, but “Putin needs an enemy so he can keep stealing” is cartoon stuff. You’d have to wonder who Younger has been getting his information from.

As punishment for my factual journalism, I was subjected to political harassment by the Trump administration upon my return from Iran.
This Israeli-influenced criminal cartel is clearly threatened by my reporting from Tehran, where I showed the massive crowds of mourners and ferocious public backlash to the assassination of [Ayatollah Ali] Khamenei, exposed US and Israeli war crimes against civilians from the ground, and conducted candid interviews with officials, negotiators and influential Iranians.
The seizure of my devices was a clear act of intimidation aimed at deterring me and others from doing further critical reporting from Iran, which is likely why my interrogators from CPB demanded to know if I would be returning to Tehran to report any time soon.
