when doing optogenetic neural stimulation (e.g. monkey), close to light guide there is most photon flow and it decays with distance. At which distance does stimulation induce most spikes (#neurons*#deltaSpikes)?

And therefore far-field imaging can be used to differentiate between the two!

Interestingly autofluorescence and functional fluorescence couple differently to guided modes in the tapered fibers, probably because of the different refractive index of the medium where they are generated (the silica in one case, the brain in the other)

1/n Very proud of this work led by @_JaeeonLee_ nature.com/articles/s4159… It takes a modern bend on analysis of parallel loops through the basal ganglia (building on such classic work by Peter Strick and others) to show separate action linked channels through multiple BG nuclei

3/n Then exploiting my favorite technology (tapered fibers @OptogeniX ) he can compare in a single animal the effect of stimulating these separate pathways. The link between anatomy and functional effect is clear.
