Collaboration first! Looking forward to this great partnership with a great group of people. If you are interested in working on education and outreach in Neuro/AI, then let's talk!

@neimarkgeffen freesound.org If you'd rather build your own dataset, Freesound has a number of recordings at 96kHz and even several hundred at 192kHz!

@tcarpenter216 My hypothesis is that Traditional math degrees are taught to be as obtuse as possible. The idea being that intuition is fallible and so you must rely on proofs and logic for everything.

... I will accept that engineering, math, and STEM programs may tend this way. Perhaps toughening up would be a good thing. Perhaps this is a learning experience for me. Regardless, I do think it will push many students away. That was my original concern and remains so. / fin

People are asking what happened. In short: I ran across some complex notation in an 'intro to data science / ML' course. I found it off-putting (having taught stats in psych/biz schools for years without calculus). Lots of great people helped. They gave ...

@KordingLab but seriously, look to industry, there are entire industries ( Scrum, PMP) devoted to how to plan large projects, quickly, effectively and robustly. Happy to chat more anytime about where to look.

@KordingLab You are a much better leader than you give yourself credit for and I'm glad you realize it. my recommendation would be to hire a good project manager and pay them a ton of money. 😁

So I just did a 360, a thorough evaluation of who I am as a leader. My main weakness is that I am not great at planning (somewhat to my surprise I am emotionally quite a bit better as a leader than I credited myself to be). Any recommendations on books to learn planning from?

Be skeptical of any research that shows the health risks / benefits of a behavior that can also be correlated to wealth. Is quinoa good for you? Or do rich people get better healthcare?

@patrickmineault I always wondered if this is simply experience-driven: 2x speed on youtube once sounded incomprehensible but now feels slow to me. Perhaps congenitally blind people are simply ahead of the game as they have more experience with ultrafast speech from using screen readers

Some congenitally blind people are able to process ultrafast speech: 2.5X speed and up! This seems to involve visual cortex, an interesting application of the idea of remapping brain circuits. ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/P…

I dont want more management books that are like "just change culture!" I want books like "Alright so your company culture is dysfunctional. You haven't had a 1:1 with your boss in 1yr. Your role changes every 6mo. And you don't control any of that. Okay, now let's do great work"

@KordingLab Giving a talk with no slides or notes is simultaneously the best way to demonstrate your mastery of a subject and the worst way to convey information about said subject

Philosopher giving talk while reading and no slides. I don’t know how they do it. I need the crutch of slides or equations or at least a whiteboard. I can not understand at all. I am just incompetent at listening to words, I guess.
