@karol The vast majority of, if not all, shoplifting incidents do not involve $50,000 in property damage while committing a felony. These are two significantly different crimes and the story itself makes that point.

I don’t know why Gov.Newsom would do this. Didn’t he read the CNN piece that shoplifting is over?

They closed stores in Democratic strongholds that don't prosecute crime, got rid of self-checkout in lots of areas, and locked a lot of merchandise behind glass. All of this is admitted in the piece and this apparently is a win for CNN.

Important update. Some agencies publicize their indictments and not always follow up on outcomes. In Brooklyn, gang takedowns result in serious prison sentences.

In the 1970s and 1980s, New York City was plagued by sky-high violent crime rates. The crime was a secondary effect of drug trafficking: At first it was mainly heroin, then crack cocaine took over. Violent crime was combatted by prosecuting drug traffickers. Low level dealers were jailed, then prosecutors worked their way up the chain to get the drug kingpins. Now we're "too smart" for that. The heroes of that era are now villainized as racists. The prosecutions were "inequitable". People of Color were "inequitably" imprisoned. So, New York State adopted a program of righting those supposed wrongs. Former drug traffickers were given preference in a program to allow them to open legal cannabis shops. But, as an effect of the same misguided "compassion" which turned heroes into supposed villains and villains into supposed heroes, illegal smoke shops were allowed to spring up all over the city.
