this is a very interesting, engaging essay, & I don't mean to be critical, but the N Y Times is often exasperating / frustrating in drawing back from even suggesting the obvious, with a sort of disingenuous air; why not acknowledge that the very fact of Obama as "the first Black American president" stirred up a powerful backlash in the US out of all proportion to anything Obama did as president.
this essay, thoughtful as it is, presents the election of T***p, the anti-Obama, as something of a mystery. it was not Obama's accomplishments as president that led to T***p's election, it was Obama's identity.

In every clip I've seen of Noem today, she's saying something she can't know or that is a lie. She also undercuts 2A to say carrying ammo is a problem on its face. I know it's too much to expect people to be responsible, but this is opposite of a grown-up doing the job.

It's not clear what driver's motives were. Some say she's trying to evade, not hurt. Fine. She's driving a car toward an officer and makes contact with him, which seems to undercut the notion the car was no threat. I’m glad for the sake of facts, there are many angles and likely body cam. It’s a terrible end to this encounter. There will be an investigation, and I'm open to new information, but I wouldn’t expect to flee, hit an officer with my car, and receive low consequences.
