🐢Earlier this month, an aquatic turtle sampling event was conducted by the Turtle Survival Alliance North American Freshwater Turtle Research Group at @OrangeCoParksFL's #KellyPark #RockSprings. Volunteers hand-captured turtles as part of a long-term population study. Forty-one turtles, including the Florida softshell turtle, common snapping turtle, peninsular cooter, red-bellied cooter, loggerhead musk turtle, eastern musk turtle, and yellow-bellied slider, were marked, had their biometrics recorded, and then released.

There’s been a lot of confusion about changes in the law related to altering or obscuring license plates that took effect in October and can now result in significantly increased penalties. Florida Statute 320.061 has been updated to make it illegal to alter or cover any readable information on your issued license plate and registration decal, including: ◼Vehicle Registration Certificates ◼License Plates ◼ Temporary Tags ◼Mobile Home Stickers ◼Validation Stickers It Is Illegal to: ◼Mutilate, deface, change the color, or otherwise alter any of these items ◼Put sprays, coatings, covers, tints, frames that obscure the license plate information, reflective materials, or illuminated devices on or around your license plate ◼Place anything on or around the license plate that interferes with the legibility, visibility from angles, or detectability by law enforcement or toll and traffic cameras Penalty: Knowingly breaking this law is a second-degree misdemeanor, punishable by a $500 fine and up to 60 days in jail.

Registration is open for our Cardboard Canoe Regatta! Kelly Park's Cardboard Canoe Regatta returns to the chilly 68-degree waters of Rock Springs. Teams of five will compete by building and racing a canoe using cardboard and duct tape on Saturday, January 17. Registration is open now through Friday, January 9, 2026, at 5 p.m. or until all spots have been filled. Registration fee is $50 per team. "Boat artists" younger than 12 are not included in the team member count but cannot race. Participants 12 or older are included in the team member count. All canoes must be built from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m., using only cardboard and duct tape provided on event day. Teams race their canoes in the clear, chilly waters of Rock Springs beginning at 1 p.m., with prizes awarded to Race Winner, Crowd Favorite and Most Spectacular Sinking!
