On the agenda today is a multi stakeholder breakfast meeting on the signing, ratification or adoption of regional and international treaties and initiatives that promote good mining sector governance. Organized by @ZELA_Infor, the objectives of this meeting are to: · Raise awareness and facilitate multi-stakeholder engagements among government ministries and other stakeholders on the importance of signing, ratifying or adoption of treaties and initiatives on mining sector governance for investment and economic development; · Identify and unpack some of the most important international mineral governance initiatives or treaties that Zimbabwe may consider for adoption; · Help stakeholders to appreciate government’s priorities and plans on signing, ratifying or adoption of treaties and initiatives on mining sector governance in accordance with national legislation; · Develop CSOs’ follow up advocacy initiatives on signing, ratifying or adoption of treaties and initiatives on mining sector governance. @ZELA_Infor spent the week in Manicaland holding Alternative Mining Indaba sessions at Ward, District and Provincial levels where communities interfaced with service providers and corporates to promote transparency and accountability in the mining sector. The alternative mining indabas were convened in collaboration with @ZIMCODD1, @zccinzim and @CNRG_ZIM. #Responsible mining and sourcing practices were topical in the sessions where mining companies were implored to prioritize community engagement for sustainable development as actively involving local communities in decision-making processes ensures their needs are met and fosters responsible mining practices. Apart from corporate social responsibility (CSR), mining companies were advised to fulfill their tax obligations to support community development and contribute towards the uplifting of local economies. Another topical issue was the protection of children's rights as implementing strict policies against child labor in the mining sector is crucial to preventing school dropouts and safeguard the future of the youth.
