Paddle Out Plastic

@PadleOutPlastic

We’re direct action ocean stewards, paddling out plastic from aquatic environments, helping people see what they can't see--a steady stream of polluting plastic

👇🏼PROOF US @EPA has been duped plastics industry's false claims 🤥they would improve ♻️recycling of plastic packaging for 33 years! USEPA: We expect the amount to increase because of "recent efforts by the plastics industry to push recycling" 1990 San Luis Obispbo Tribune

Only 5% of plastic is recycled in the US. We need upstream solutions that take us back to days when we didn't generate SO MUCH TRASH, not to mention days when we weren't filling our aquatic environments with wildlife-killing #plastic pollution #timeforaction @EPA #reuse #refill

Channeling @priceyharrison and picked up some trash while paddling the Neuse yesterday. Turns out discarded floaties in the river make for an excellent "captain's chair" on my paddle board.

@Win_OpenData @BoyanSlat But that is not up to you. If people want to do the cleanup, for free, because they care for some reason, then why shouldn't they? I'm one of those people, and i don't want to be compensated. But i agree that we could do this forever, so i'll let others to worry about prevention.

Scrolling through comments on videos of plastic pollution, I often see people blame the locals, companies, certain countries, politicians, etc. But can you name a single problem that has been solved by blaming? Let’s instead focus on fixing things rather than pointing fingers.

@Win_OpenData @fredsteenbergen @BoyanSlat Agree. Somebody should be compensated for what we are doing. Plus source reductions We’d rather be taking photos of wildlife out at sea, than photos of trash in the water and see our efforts as an interim very minor assist with a very major problem.

@BoyanSlat Agree we must think of problems as things to be solved, but we must find the cause(a) then evaluate solutions with an eye to finding solutions that don’t create other serious problems including for the environment, which historicallyhas been ignored by industry w/o oversight .

By default, we seem inclined to think of problems in terms of struggles (good vs bad, government vs the public, nature vs technology). We should seek to rise above this instinct, instead seeing problems as nothing more than things to be solved.
