He was just a minor racist, the sort of person who truly believes "I don't even see color" while noticing that blacks are now overrepresented on TV and movies, the sort that believes we don't have a problem with subtle institutional racism against blacks, but who can easily see the woke racism against whites. It's like the two sides who cannot see the same thing in that Minneapolis shooting video, or cannot agree on the blue-dress/black-dress picture. You have two sides that cannot see the same thing in those specific comments. The NYTimes headline is not actual facts, but interpretation that some people interpret differently.
