While the Mercator projection is conformal—maintaining accurate local angles and shapes for navigation—it fails to maintain equal-area proportions... Consequently, while a country's outline may look 'correct' in isolation, its scale relative to the rest of the world is severely distorted by latitudinal magnification...

How do I explain this to my kids?

@upsc_18 @theepicmap Of course: something has to give when you project the globe onto a flat image. Only equal-area projections preserve relative size, but all shapes and bearings are distorted in them. Mercator is the most all-round useful projection, so it will always have a use.
