So after, ahem, 18 years, this is published (South Asia edition in pipeline). A follow-up book, of sorts, looking at New&Old Delhi together, but as spaces of anticolonialism, with parrhesia as the governmentality framework, and a subaltern foci.See 🧵.. ugapress.org/book/978082036….

The more I listen to established academics speak at conferences, the more I feel that they say more or less the same thing in every talk. Most of them are also underprepared and take the audience for granted. I would much rather listen to mid and early career scholars.

The air pollution in Delhi demands a peaceful, mass protest on the streets. The air we breathe is lethally toxic. A new born baby in Delhi is heart-wrenchingly born with smoker’s lungs today. Tragically, people are already numb to this, almost as if they’re resigned to this slow death. The ruling class has a 10/10 scorecard on failing to address this crisis. For around a decade now, the same script every winter—pollution rises, the Supreme Court takes cognisance, bans firecrackers, Delhiites burn it to smokes. The Court calls for strict action against farm fires, yet nothing substantial achieved. However, there is only so much the judiciary can do. The real solution lies with the political executive. The central government must take the lead. By snatching control of Delhi’s governance (in 2015, in 2021, and in 2023), it should also assume responsibility for its issues. It’s an epidemic in the national capital of India. Unless the people don’t come out on the streets in large numbers and demand action, I doubt this broken politics can offer a real solution.

@MeghnaPant This seems like my own story and just like you, I have a daughter who is wonderful. My oxygen out of a claustrophobic marriage.

Last night, I watched It Ends With Us and found myself in tears for hours. It's been 17 years ... almost two decades ... since my ex-husband first hit me. On 5th December 2007. Despite all the overcoming .... surviving ... thriving ... I can't believe how much abuse still triggers me. To anyone who's hurt an intimate partner: know that the impact lasts a lifetime. Healing is possible, but the scars remain. No matter how strong the person is. No matter how far they've come despite you.  But, also know - that in the middle of my tears, my daughter rolled over in her sleep and wrapped her arms around me. The universe has returned the love I lost, tenfold.  To all victims of domestic violence: there is light at the end of the tunnel. Trust me. Don’t stay for the sake of love. Don't stay hoping your love will change your abuser. Leave, because there's a brighter life waiting for you, free from harm, filled with everything you truly deserve. Because if I made it, so can you.

Usually I don’t talk about stuff like this because frankly it happens way too often. But not today… As I pulled into the same faculty parking lot that I park in all the time @msstate, a white woman was coming out of my office building. Her car was parked next to the space I pulled into.
