Because each state has this thing called a State Constitution. California's State Constitution explicitly makes what Newsom is trying to do illegal. Texas's State Constitution does not. Gerrymandering is immoral and subverts the will of the people in every state. It's not right when Texas is doing it, and it's not right when California is doing it. Democracy is when voters choose their politicians, not when politicians choose their voters. Hope that clears up any confusion.

To confirm, GOP thinks a mid-cycle gerrymander is fine in Texas, but not in California. Can someone give me one reason why this makes sense? Other than “Rules for thee but not for me”?
