Every year I do an end-of-year presentation at SeamlessMD. We’ve been doing it for so long that it’s become a ritual and one of the things I most look forward to every year. I mostly tell stories about the history of the company and highlight milestones to show how far we’ve come. I also wrap the presentation in a main theme. This year’s theme was “Think Different”, inspired by the old Apple slogan highlighting folks who changed history by daring to do things differently. I reflected on many instances where we ignored conventional wisdom and chose the less travelled path, leading to greater success: ⚙️vs📱: When we started, the vast majority of companies focused on device-based Remote Patient Monitoring for chronic disease management. Instead we started with deviceless patient engagement for surgery. Not only did we avoid the saturated chronic care RPM space, but our flexible approach allowed us to scale across clinical specialties far more quickly. ‍🎓vs🌳: Everyone told us we had to start with big brand, academic customers for the market to believe in us. Instead, we started with community hospitals who have been incredibly nimble, which allowed us to implement and iterate our product much faster. 🏥vs🏠: Most companies focused on post-discharge care and preventing readmissions only. Instead, while we also started in post-discharge care, we quickly expanded the platform to support pre-admission care and then in-hospital recovery as well. This allowed us to uncover how to also reduce hospital length of stay, a value proposition most companies in our space still have yet to figure out. 🤖vs👩‍⚕️: Other digital health companies designed their teams to be traditional tech companies. Instead we built a healthcare company. Yes we have engineers, sales, marketing, etc. as well - however over 20% of our team comes from the healthcare world (e.g. clinicians, health communications specialists, etc.). This difference in approach to talent contributed to our industry-leading patient outcomes. 🚫vs🤝 Other companies avoided direct EHR integration partnerships, fearing the EHRs would steal their IP. Instead we leaned into what customers wanted and were the first company in our space to achieve integration partnerships with all the major EHRs - confident that no company could replicate our success simply by studying our product. 💰vs📈: Other companies focused on measuring success by venture capital raised. Instead we defined success by improved outcomes and ROI delivered. Funny enough, after the bubble burst in 2022, every investor now preaches that digital health has to deliver a ROI - basically the position we’ve held for 10+ years now. We don’t aim to be contrarian for the sake of doing so. Rather, we’ve found that solving problems with unconventional thinking is necessary for outsized results. What have been your organization's moments of “thinking different” and what has that impact been?
