The current M&S debate is fascinating. Lots of men coming out of the woodwork to tell us that we’re fine in lockable cubicles. Yet when you ask them if they say this to transwomen about men’s cubicles, you get crickets. Because the pressure on our boundaries only goes in one direction. Them trying to gain entry and us trying to say no.

How hard is it for companies to give women their own private space to get changed without men around? It’s not complicated. If you were born male, use the men’s changing room. If you were born female, use the women’s changing room. Most people see this as basic common sense, not controversial.

“M&S changing rooms have floor-to-ceiling lockable cubicles.” Yes. And? The cubicles are often tiny and badly lit. Women step out to use the full-length mirror at the end of the corridor because that’s where you get a more accurate picture of how something actually looks. That is especially sensitive if you’re trying on bikinis, swimwear, or a dress that requires you to remove your bra. Women should not have to worry about men coming out of nearby cubicles while they’re in that situation. Calling a woman “abusive” for raising this is outrageous.
