Clinton deserves credit for taking the political risk to raise taxes and curb spending in 1993, layout out the structural framework for the deficit reduction.  Gingrich deserves credit for holding Clinton's feet to the fire on spending limits and utilizing the legislative power of the new GOP majority to keep fiscal discipline at the top of the national agenda. The Economy deserves the rest of the credit. Without the dot-com boom generating immense tax revenue, the political compromises of 1997 would not have achieved a surplus by 1998.

IRONIC MOMENT: The last president to have a balanced budget was Democrat Bill Clinton, yet the Republican Party tells us that they are the "party of fiscal conservatism". Hmm. If Trump really wanted to make America great again, he would start with balancing the budget instead of starting silly wars in the Middle East.
