@Weinrich201 @KSHB41 @CassieKSHB I have seen a tornado, on the ground, plain as day, without sirens going off. This was in Nebraska. Normally it's the local emergency manager's office that presses the red button to sound the sirens, not the NWS. Sirens are also designed for people outside to hear, not inside.

UPDATE | Here's a street view of the tornado that began in Prairie Village, Kansas. KSHB 41's @CassieKSHB says the tornado was wider than a football field at one point in time and lifted right before Mission Hills, Kansas.

@ChelseaMedved @JulesDiner It was unpredictable. You don't want to warn the entire bow. Not all bows cause tornadoes.

NWS Survey Teams confirmed two EF-1 tornadoes occurred embedded within the line of severe storms last night. The first in Shawnee, KS & the second in Prairie Village, KS. We know about the damage in Platte Co. & Jackson Co. We'll update you as we gather more info. #mowx #kswx

@Weinrich201 @KSHB41 @CassieKSHB Unfortunately, you can have tornadoes without a tornado warning. Last night was a bow echo. These can produce tornadoes unpredictably, without warning. Here's an archive image from last night.

@KSHB41 @CassieKSHB Do we have confirmation that the tornado sirens went off? We were in the path shortly after where it touched down and didn't hear any.

@KSUFanatic @JulesDiner @NWSKansasCity The tornado was probably only on the ground for a few minutes, at most. By the time the radar got done with its scan, the tornado would have already lifted.

@KSUFanatic @JulesDiner @NWSKansasCity I'm not formally trained so take this with a grain of salt. I just have experience chasing tornados and hurricanes. Bow echoes are extremely dangerous for several reasons. 1. Fast moving 2. Unpredictable spin ups 3. Damaging winds NWS has PhDs for a reason. I trust them.

@JulesDiner @JulesDiner, here are the archived radar images from last night. This is called a bow echo. Do a quick Google search on this term. You can have damaging winds & unpredictable tornadoes with these.

@JulesDiner @NWSKansasCity Fail what? You can have quick, unpredictable spin ups. These are almost impossible to predict. Btw, the NWS does not control the sirens. That would be your local EMS office.

@JulesDiner @NWSKansasCity You can have a tornado without a tornado warning. A severe thunderstorm warning is enough to tell you the risk is there for severe weather.
