OPENAI IS BUILDING ONE APP TO RULE THEM ALL OpenAI is merging ChatGPT, its coding tool Codex, and its Atlas browser into a single desktop "superapp." Because apparently having three separate apps was slowing them down. The CEO of Applications, Fidji Simo, told staff bluntly: "Fragmentation has been slowing us down and making it harder to hit the quality bar we want." Translation: we launched too many things and now nothing works as well as it should. The timing isn't subtle. OpenAI reportedly went into "code red" after Anthropic's Claude Code started eating their lunch in the developer market. Nothing motivates a consolidation strategy like watching a competitor gain ground. The superapp would let users chat, code, and browse. All from one interface. OpenAI framing it as a push toward "agentic" AI that can actually do things on your behalf rather than just answer questions. An IPO is also reportedly on the horizon this year, which means looking like a focused, unified company right now matters a lot more than it did six months ago. So to recap: OpenAI built three apps, got beaten by a competitor, merged them into one app, and called it a strategy.
