@shagbark_hick My Father has always had a big moustache that covers his mouth. I've never seen him clean shaven. His teeth were black and rotting from a childhood issue. Now he has dentures but only wears them to eat. Still keeps the stache so you can't see his lack of teeth.

Even if I shave and put on a suit people know my priors. It's the teeth. Bourgeois types take one look at my teeth and they instantly know: "this guy's not one of us." In fact, incongruity between one's teeth and one's manner of speech and dress freaks a lot of people out, including poor people. If you're dressed like a professor, well-groomed, and articulate, people of all backgrounds -- rich, poor, and middle-class alike -- are often unnerved and standoffish. It's like they don't know what to do with you. And you can't really change your teeth unless you're obsessive and throw tons of money at them. Realistically, if you've got bad teeth, the damage is done, you've just gotta own it.

.@RealJamesWoods watching the Billion Dollar Bubble after it came up in a continuing ed class for CPAs today. The seminar was as exciting as it sounds but the movie is awesome.

@cosmchk @americascowgirl Sweet milk is regular milk. It's an old way of differentiating it from buttermilk. We have a lot of old family recipes from Northwest Louisiana that use the same term.

If you’ve followed me for any length of time, you’ve probably come to expect the “Sundays down South” post that comes about this time every week. But this one, this one feels different. There is a shift in the atmosphere. Everywhere I look, I see the evidence of lost sheep coming home. This week has indeed been a turning point. What evil thought it had accomplished, Christ has used for the furtherance of His kingdom. The gates of hell shall not prevail.

@eliz_herreid And mine is staying around 100 resting while on meds to slow it down. We need to get together and maybe we'd even each other out. But seriously 40s is really low and you need to get checked out

@beadlizard7 @LAChas77 Yep. Other than Orchestra and my basic language classes I probably could have learned more at the library and family than I did at school. I'm now trying to get my German back. I just want to learn enough to read it. And I really wish some basic Latin had been required

@LAChas77 I learned more from my grandparents and dad than I did in school. I was "a top student" and aced the SATs. I had some excellent teachers, and orchestra was equal parts hard work and bliss, but nearly everything I needed to know in order to succeed in life was learned at home.

K-6: 90% my useful education 7-8: probably wasn't necessary High school: learned nothing

@AppyOrtho It took me until my teens to realize that my Mother says things in her head yet fails to say them out loud on a regular basis. Or she says part 2 of something and leaves out part 1.

It’s so cringe the way things that make total sense in my brain make absolutely no sense once they are out of my mouth.

@TheRealLogosT Do you have any bookkeeping experience? There is a shortage of good bookkeepers. I know it's not your main field but it's at least adjacent. The positions don't usually pay that well but can help you make connections. Most are hired through temp agencies around here.

Almost 2 months later and nothing…. The desperation is getting worse, my financial obligations (student loans) are massive, and I am running out of time. I honestly have no clue what to do anymore.

@eliz_herreid I just want to sit quietly with you and listen to music and knit. I also find myself in my late 40s. Single. Alone. I'm caretaker for my elderly parents and my disabled sister and I have trouble understanding how this loneliness can be a vocation.

@MaterGarruli I had to replace my window unit. Still just have the 1 unit for my house. But I've been so grateful after going without for 3 days.

@FrMatthewLC I can still remember my Dad's direct line at the office. So when Kroger refused my old landline or my cell as a proper number, I used that number. And, I know how to make federal tax deposits over the phone. Had to use that one again a couple of years ago.

I used to have a bunch of phone numbers memorized. Now I only remember my own number & ones I still have from back then, as all is saved on my phone. (Oddly, I have my parents' home number memorized, but I don't think I've called it in 20+ years as cell phones are preferred.)

@OldHollowTree 75% is extreme..... It was 83% and 85F here yesterday morning. I refused to look at it in the afternoon. But I finally got my A/c installed. Not a fun few days.
