@PiltdownMan2

For 40 years, scientists wrote thousands of papers about me being the missing link. Then they discovered I was fake. But for many, it was too late.

@RepMikeLevin The fact that this post hasn’t been CN’d yet is why conservatives keep losing the information wars.

If you changed your name when you got married, take notice.    Under the SAVE Act, your driver’s license wouldn’t be enough to vote. You’d need a birth certificate that matches your current legal name. Most women who changed their name at marriage don’t have that. And getting it costs money you shouldn’t have to spend just to cast a ballot.    Republicans aren’t targeting noncitizens. They’re targeting you.

@mansourtarek_ They didn’t bet on his death. They bet on him being out of power. There’s a difference.

On Khamenei: We don’t list markets directly tied to death. When there are markets where potential outcomes involve death, we design the rules to prevent people from profiting from death. That is what we did here. I know some of you disagree and prefer that we list these markets without a death carveout because it keeps the rules simple and because many traditional markets, like oil futures, can be proxy markets for war and death. But we believe that’s different than having a market directly settling on someone’s death, which is not allowed for US regulated entities. What’s the point of the market, then? A market on Ali Khamenei out as Supreme Leader was important because leadership changes in Iran have major impact on the world order: • geopolitical implications • economic consequences • national security considerations • oil and commodity prices, many of which move based on news and expectations around this outcome And it’s always possible for a ruler to step down or transition power without death, even in autocracies. It just happened in Venezuela. In these instances, we make the caveat clear in the rules and in the market page, but today is a good learning that we can do more in terms of improving the UX and adding more ways to surface the rules. We are committed to improving. In the meantime, here’s what we’re going to do: • We are reimbursing all fees from this market • If you have a position from before Khamenei died, you will be paid out on the last-traded price before his death. (This was clear in our rules) • If you have a position from after he died, we’re going to fully reimburse your cost of entry

This is BS. There has been no century-scale increase in either the number or intensity of cold waves. In fact, cold snaps have become less and less common, particularly since the late 1980s. When cold air outbreaks happen, it's an artifact of internal variability. It's weather, and it has nothing to do with Arctic temperature trends.

The rapidly warming Arctic is reshaping our atmosphere by weakening the temperature gradient. This change allowing polar air to spill farther south & produce intense cold outbreaks even as global average temperatures continue to rise.

In 1995, 77.1% of global primary energy was provided by fossil fuels (coal, natural gas, and oil). As of 2024, 76.4% still comes from fossil fuels. That's a 0.7 percentage point drop in 30 years. World governments have spent TRILLIONS of dollars on “green” energy projects, and it has barely made a dent in the energy mix (note, these figures are based on the substitution method for fair comparison, so it slightly lowers fossil fuel figures). The fact is that renewable energy sources, like them or not, are largely add-ons to existing energy sources (primarily fossil fuel and nuclear power) that provide us transient savings in optimal conditions. That may change in the future with battery backup as they become cheaper, but that still won't address the fact that oil is STILL going to be needed for lubricants, plastics, fertilizers, etc. Oil is the backbone of modern society, so even if it were to no longer to be used as fuel, it will be used in another capacity and wars will be fought over it.
Give A Shit About Nature@giveashitnature

How stupid is it that we’re fighting even more wars over oil when we could have spent the same amount of money and transitioned the entire goddamn planet to renewables?

Instead of sending ICE agents to harass travelers at airports, why don’t Republicans get their act together and agree to pay TSA workers like we’ve asked them to SEVEN TIMES now?

These replies are incredible because it shows how little these people seem to know about JCPOA. Out of the 6 listed demands, Obama’s deal achieved none of them. Not one. It didn’t address the missile program at all. In fact, they actually reduced sanctions related to that program. It did nothing to address funding and arming regional terror proxies. It did not require them to decommission nuclear reactors. It did allow for enrichment, which they could and did ramp up to a higher level over time.

A Seattle man who shot and killed an eight-month pregnant Korean-American woman and nearly killed her husband when they were driving to work has been found not guilty by reason of insanity. Cordell Goosby m—rdered Elina Kwon and her unborn baby in June 2023 when they were stopped at a red light. Prosecutors did not charge him for killing the baby due to concerns about protecting abortion in the liberal state. After hearing testimony from defense medical experts that Goosby was "insane" at the time of the shootings, the prosecution agreed to have the case ended through the not guilty motion. Goosby will be committed to an institution and regularly evaluated to see if he is fit to be released to the public. ngocomment.com
