@EBNEO @PlaNeT2_trial Thank you for sharing. My little boy (23 weeks) had platelets a couple times, was then part of the trial but never required platelets after that! Have still got his little planet2 card that was on his incubator!

@EBNEO Always interested in knowing how the results of a trial impact the practice of those who conducted the trial. I mean, has anyone spent more time considering the implications? A take home point for me from this session: Anna Curley DOES NOT LIKE platelets. #HotTopicsNeo2019

What next for neonatal platelet research? - How fast should we give platelets? How much? Should they be ABO matched?

Previous studies suggested that more platelet transfusions and more agressive threshholds were associated with poorer outcomes. #HotTopicsNeo2019 #neoEBM

Thrombocytopaenia affects 25% of NICU admissions, an important but under-researched topic. 15% of babies <1500g receive a platelet transfusion in the UK. The USA were, in 2011, even more liberal with platelet transfusions in preterm babies than some parts of Europe.

@PlaNeT2_trial “result suggests that adult platelets can have delayed adverse effects in very preterm infants by unknown mechanisms... “This trial reinforces the caution that deaths in trials of preterm infants may occur late and beyond the primary intervention.”

@EBNEO Struck in initial read of @PlaNeT2_trial by time lag between differences in exposure (mostly trial day 1) & when you notice differences in death/bleeding (over a week out). Per Dr. Curley: adds to her suspicion that platelet-mediated harm is via inflammatory cascade. #neoEBM
