A friendly reminder that California is only pretending to run on "renewable" energy. At 6:55 p.m., renewables are providing just 14% of the electricity needed in the state. Batteries are good for 14.6%, but they run out before midnight. Relying on imports for 17.2% of our power.

The California Legislature voted Thursday to give Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom's administration permission to buy massive amounts of electricity, a move aimed at avoiding blackouts by shoring up the state's power supply while jumpstarting the West Coast's fledgling offshore wind industry. Five companies paid roughly $750 million last year to lease areas off the California coast to build wind turbines. Collectively, those projects could generate enough electricity to power 3.5 million homes But so far, the state's largest utility companies have not been willing to commit to buying power from projects like those because it would cost too much money and take too long to build The bill would let the state buy the power. The money would come from a surcharge imposed on Californians' electricity bills. California already has among the highest electricity rates in the country.

At 9:05 a.m. on a bright July day, solar energy is providing 13,833 megawatts of electricity for California, but electricity demand is 31,125 MW. Unless you're dyslexic, this will never add up. Natural gas providing 16,250 MW, like a concerned parent quietly helping the kids out.

It's 10:30 p.m, California's electricity demand is 34,580 megawatts, and renewables are producing 5,525 MW. If you're starting to think the state's climate targets don't align with reality, you're right. Natural gas providing 65% of the state's electricity needs. Batteries? 1%.
