This is the average developer experience in IRAN: > developer salary: ~$120/month, less than a Codex subscription price > “let me buy a Claude subscription” banks are cut off from the world, can’t buy or sell internationally > “download a local 70B LLM” internet is cooked, takes 5 business days > “learn something on YouTube” censored by government + Instagram, WhatsApp, Telegram, X > pip install and docker pull is a nightmare due to a combination of sanctions, censorships > VPN is more essential than an IDE > brain drain is real. most talents have immigrated or are planning to. your work buddy will likely not be there next year > electricity is cut off 2 hrs/day and internet shut down for weeks every year > AWS, Azure, Google Analytics, Adobe, are all off the menu and sanctioned for Iranians > “time to upgrade my laptop” don’t even think about it. your economy is brutal > “join an online coding bootcamp” blocked, along with most educational platforms > “I must plan my future” good luck with a +60% inflation. your raise will evaporate in 4 months > “keep up with AI research” conferences and webinars are out of reach due to visa denials and travel costs and developers are having it easy compared to other professions with much lower income. and all these are just work, let alone hundreds of other problems Iranians face every day under the dictatorship. so don’t embarrass yourself “educating” Iranians on how to feel about their situation if you haven’t lived their life and support and empathize with the will of the people instead.

vitalik.eth@VitalikButerin·
Encrypted messaging, like @signalapp, is critical for preserving our digital privacy. Two important next steps for the space are (i) permissionless account creation and (ii) metadata privacy. @session_app and @SimpleXChat are two messaging apps pushing these directions forward. For this reason I've donated 128 ETH to each. Addresses available on their websites if you wish to follow on: getsession.org simplex.chat But also, actually download and use them! Neither of the two are perfect pieces of software, they have a way to go to get to truly optimal user experience and security. Strong metadata privacy requires decentralization, decentralization is hard, users expecting multi-device support makes everything harder. Sybil / DoS resistance, both in the message routing network and on the user side (without forcing phone number dependence) adds further difficulty. These problems need more eyes on them. I wish all teams working on these important problems best of luck.

I've had a few people ask if the giveaways I perform are legitimate or if they're just some sort of engagement bait. The giveaways are real. Hundreds of people can attest to the free stuff they've received from myself or our sponsors (who give to me to give to others). This is my 3rd year doing it. It's every Holiday season. It's just educational or helpful stuff for nerds. It's all free and randomly chosen. Giving stuff for free is cool and badass and makes you feel warm inside. This year I'll be giving away books on malware, programming, network defense, and computer history. I also have TryHackMe thingies to giveaway. I also have some swag and stickers and stuff. Maybe more vendors will give me stuff to giveaway too, I don't know. We'll see! I'll post more details when they come up. Okay back to your regularly scheduled programming of cat pictures and malware

‼️ A very important announcement from the GrapheneOS devs: GrapheneOS is being heavily targeted by the French state because we provide highly secure devices and won't include backdoors for law enforcement access. They're conflating us with companies selling closed source products using portions of our code. Both French state media and corporate media are publishing many stories attacking the GrapheneOS project based on false and unsubstantiated claims from French law enforcement. They've made a clear threat to seize our servers and arrest our developers if we do not cooperate by adding backdoors. Due to this, we're leaving France and leaving French service providers including OVH. We need substantial help from the community to push back against this across platforms. People malicious towards us are also using it as an opportunity to spread libel/harassment content targeting our team, raid our chat rooms and much more. /e/ and iodéOS are both based in France, and are both actively attacking GrapheneOS including spreading false narratives about it not being for regular people which helped to support the false narratives being propagated by French law enforcement. /e/ receives substantial government funding. Both are extremely non-private and insecure which is why France is targeting us while those get government funding. We need a lot more help than usual and we're sending our the first ever notification to everyone on the server because this is a particularly bad situation. If people help us, it will enable us to focus more on development again including releasing experimental Pixel 10 releases very soon.

The paper says LLMs work because they learn real patterns in how people use words. Language here means everything people actually say and write. The main driver is frequency, common patterns become rules and rare ones feel like exceptions. Grammar is just a summary of high-frequency habits found across lots of texts. Training on next words pushes a model to match those real usage frequencies and it makes fewer mistakes over time. Embeddings store relationships between words so the model can spot analogies and reuse them in new places. This is why models can write fluent text without special hidden structures or extra grounding. A good theory should rebuild the thing it explains, and models already rebuild language every day by generating it. They still mess up facts sometimes, but the core claim stands, they model language well because language is patterned usage. That is the whole point the paper makes. ---- Paper – arxiv. org/abs/2510.12766 Paper Title: "Language Models Model Language"
