Former MP Sumalatha Ambareesh has raised concerns over high charges on food delivery platform Swiggy after a recent order significantly exceeded the base price of the item. Sumalatha revealed that she ordered pongal from The Rameshwaram Cafe, where the listed price was ₹115. However, after additional charges, the final bill rose to ₹273—an increase of ₹158. Sharing her experience on X, she questioned the pricing structure and called for greater transparency, asking why a ₹115 item should cost more than double by the time it reaches the customer. Her post has since gone viral, triggering widespread discussion online. The issue highlights a growing concern among users of food delivery apps, where added costs such as delivery fees, packaging charges, platform fees, and GST often push the total bill far beyond the base price of the food. This is not an isolated case. In September 2025, a customer in Coimbatore reported that an order placed via Swiggy cost 81% more than purchasing the same items directly from the restaurant. Swiggy has previously clarified that menu prices on its platform are determined by partner restaurants, and any difference in pricing is at their discretion. The debate comes amid rising platform fees across the industry. In March 2026, Swiggy increased its platform fee to ₹17.58 per order (including GST), up from ₹14.99—a roughly 17% hike. Rival platform Zomato has also implemented similar increases in recent months. Additionally, an 18% GST is applied to delivery charges, further inflating the final cost borne by consumers. Many social media users have echoed Sumalatha’s concerns, sharing similar experiences and calling for clearer, more consumer-friendly pricing. The controversy has reignited discussions around the “cost of convenience” in India’s rapidly growing online food delivery market.
