@matthewclifford I’ve been thinking about this for a while. I use voice chat more than text — and there’s no good async voice chat app! Lots of low-hanging fruit in UI, transcripts, searchable messages cross-convo, pulling out contextual links.

2/ we need to have synchronous mingling spaces, not just async ones like slack channels, where people can find others and chat (there are a bunch of interesting solutions here like @gather_town or @getTeamflow or @branch_gg )

The last 18 months have provided a crash course in remote work. It can be done. There is so much yet to improve. But the next decade is going to provide the biggest shift and migration since the interstate and suburbs of the 50s.

The media continues to get the rise of remote work wrong Every employee knows the stories by CEO's of big companies + landlords who own offices are false I've spoken to 2,000+ remote workers in the last 12 months A few predictions on what's going to happen [ a thread ] 💻🏠🌍

Many of us went virtual with COVID but haven't embraced asynchronous communication. We switched our communication from in person to virtual but then had back to back meetings on teams/zoom etc.

@martyrdison This sounds like a next gen remote software tool Instead of "hey Google do X" It's "hey Joe... (They're being pinged) what's going on with that latest project?" If they answer quick or have auto answer on, the audio just comes through. Otherwise, it's recorded and delayed

it’s actually amazing how productive you can be when you can literally just scream someone’s name across the room when you want their opinion versus slacking them

The most underused tech of 2021: phones. Not every meeting needs to have cameras on. In voice-only calls, we're better at reading emotions—and more in sync. Video adds cognitive load: we worry about making the right facial expressions and struggle to interpret body language.

@TaylorHoliday @Mehtabalism I feel #3…there is a balance to strike between async/sync communication that’s insanely difficult with remote. This is why solutions like @PresenceChat (when adopted org-wide) can be that balance. In between scheduled zooms and slack, there’s voice rooms.

@embirico @remotionco Yes calling was invented to manage privacy. But now people don’t want to call each other as much because it’s invasive and demanding. So instead people text outside of calls 😅

@PresenceChat @remotionco Interesting. Actually, from a privacy and comfort at work perspective, I think it’s very important people know whether or not they’re live. Not sure we want the line to be blurry.

I think of this every time customers ask for text chat in @remotionco. (Or when advisors suggest it.) And part of why I think of this every time is because I'm still not sure I'm right!

7/ Most SaaS products are *not direct replacements.* If a customer tells you the product is incomplete, consider making it compelling/frictionless/possible to use even through incomplete. If this can’t be done — consider whether the hypothesis is wrong.

@embirico @remotionco I see. Isn’t remotion trying to blur line between what is considered inside/outside a call? And calling is an old paradigm that we at least believe is already fading🤔
