It appears that some of the anti-Bryson DeChambeau commentary has softened a bit now that the British Open is over. The harshness of Friday's discussion -- "He did everything but lay down behind it or take a weed whacker to the tall grass," said the Golf Channel's Brandel Chamblee -- faded by Sunday, probably because of 1) the understanding comments of players Max Homa, Sam Burns, and Scottie Scheffler; 2) the crowd's clear support of DeChambeau; and 3) DeChambeau's continued play, even though he faded to -4 and T14. Why such a sharp reaction Friday? Some of it was certainly just a dispute about the rules, but some of it also seemed to be about LIV. A post-LIV reconciliation still seems a long way away.

Don't personally know Bryson or Rory but been around both many times, at many PGA Tour events. Bryson is a super nice guy, little awkward at times, but friendly to everyone. Rory is the biggest dick on tour, including Tiger. And it's not even close. His whole persona is totally fake. Just a total ass behind the scenes. Ask Steve Elkington.

The entire anti-LIV golf media ecosystem worked OT to deny Bryson Dechambeau the Claret Jug (pregame to fake penalty to Saturday’s gaslighting). Thinking they’d make way for a PGA TOUR golden boy. Instead. End up with 39-yo journeyman Ryan Fox. Super worthy like champ like Aaron Rai. But. Same one-off juice. Karma AF.

Real ball knowers realize what Bryson did was against the rules. I don’t know one high level golfer or golf mind that has jumped to his defense. 100% a penalty, it’s just one that’s not called enough back in the states because PGA tour lets their players walk over them.

There are lots of ______ Twitter Golf Twitter might be the toughest crowd of all of them. People who are unfailingly 100 % certain they know the rules of golf, how to produce it for tv, the players who are good/bad guys, best and worst courses and set ups. It’s a delight.

The comments made by @BradFaxon were sad, insinuating Bryson was intentionally "improving his lie". I truly just lost all respect for him.

Started doing stories on DeChambeau when he was practicing out of Dragonfly Golf Club north of Fresno. He was performative then; he's performative now. He is unconventional, non-conforming, exasperating, compelling, petulant and gifted. I've witnessed his kindness and his hissy fits. His reaction to an appropriate penalty was childish. But every story needs an antagonist, and DeChambeau is golf's antagonist...
