Virtually every fish in one of Arizona’s largest lakes has died after the reservoir fell to less than 1% of its capacity. This spring, the mountain snow that feeds the reservoir reached just 2% of its normal level. With almost no inflow, the lake shrank dramatically, the water overheated, oxygen levels collapsed, and nearly 100% of the fish suffocated. But drought wasn’t the only reason. Even as the reservoir was collapsing, water continued flowing downstream to supply farms under agreements written decades ago, when a snowpack collapse this severe was considered unthinkable. The ecosystem kept losing water while the climate that sustained it had already changed. The rules were built for a world that no longer exists. Climate change isn’t only testing ecosystems. Conservative populists could make headway with the idea that, "There should be no such thing as a jobless father in America."
In general, I believe in a federal job guarantee, with the US government as the employer of last resort. But if we want family friendly policy, we could start with loosely guaranteeing fathers a good job. If you do this in a way that is gender neutral, it's functionally a Federal Job Guarantee.

I’m all for fewer rats and cleaner sidewalks. While I didn’t own a car when I lived on the UWS, I know many families who do. Schlepping kids for sports and games, weekend homes or commuting for work. It’s already hard to find street parking so adding $500-1000 expense for a garage is significant.

One of the wealthiest guys I know stayed in a 5 star hotel before getting the keys to his apartment, and he enjoyed it so much he cancelled the apartment contract & stayed in the hotel for 4 years straight. Never seen a person so happy and stress free in my life.
