Irami: If you want racial justice, you are going to have to reconceive the White family. Crowd: How can you SAY THAT! Meanwhile, White moms acting out of the entitlements of motherhood: twitter.com/JuddLegum/stat…

A Tennessee chapter of "Moms for Liberty" filed a complaint with the Tennessee Department of Education alleging that assigning 2nd Graders a book about MLK Jr's March on Washington violated the state's new law banning Critical Race Theory

@stevemagness I know people spend thousands of dollars traveling all over the country for kids travel teams in baseball, girls vollyball etc. And I bet those same people don't have $500 in a fund for their kids college.

Can someone explain why some 10 year old needs to travel hundreds of miles for competition that they almost certainly could have found locally? Travel leagues for youth sports should be banned.

@stevemagness I don't know if they should be banned, but they should be stigmatized. Up until middle school, unless you live in rural America, you can find all of the competion you could ever need in a 20 mile radius.

3. Building skills without AI makes you a better AI user later. The current world champion trained without engines for years. You can't supervise AI in a domain you never learned to think in yourself.

Chess is 30 years ahead of every other profession in dealing with AI. The best case study we have for what's coming. 4 lessons: 1. Human-AI collaboration had a 15-year shelf life in chess. "Human in the loop" is a phase.

I'm trying to put together a list of institutions where the professionals should not be the ones making decisions. For example, at a city council meeting, there can be a mayor, a city manager, HR exec, and the council. The lowest paid person in that group should probably have the most authority.

It's a marked change of pace, but In Dubois Battle is rougher, grittier Steinbeck and The Winter of our Discontent is slightly better Steinbeck. Also, grab a copy of "Journal of a Novel." Steinbeck wrote letters to his editor everyday to warm up before working on East of Eden. I still recall a few of them when I'm feeling overwhelmed by the task.

Are there no longer any world renowned philosophers? I can’t think of anyone in their 50s or 60s now that has the influence of a Rawls or Habermas— neither of them were as influential as Foucault. Of course, I’m not that familiar with the state of philosophy in China or Africa.

@keeper_orchard As you should. I gave my 13 year old Cannery Row, and it worked. My highest moment is going to be in nine or ten years when she reads Winter of Our Discontent, then we'll really have something to talk about.

Both of my early 20s daughters are reading Steinbeck right now. One reading Grapes of Wrath, the other reading East of Eden. Not for a class or because they have to but by their own choice. I count that as a win.

So many technical professionals use AI, it's come to the point where services like Gemini and Chat GPT are democratizing access to the kinds of tools they've already normalized.

Folks: Why don't you let your kids enjoy their childhood. Their childhood is theirs. Irami: No. Their adulthood is theirs, mostly. Their childhood is a family project, where they are a junior member of the group.

@IramiOF I was thinking the same thing until I remembered that Israel is run by the US not the other way. They just like to make it seem like Israel is running the show

Children are not wards under the school's charge; they are primarily family members, and the school is the family's staff.

The worst segment of the K-12 mediocrity is 6th-8th grade math. Typically, kids learn counting/arithmetic in elementary school (K-5) and then spend the next 3 full years spinning their wheels without learning much new math, only moving on to Algebra I in 9th grade. If you take those 3 years and put them to good use, you can actually enable honors kids to cover all of high school math during those years and pass the AP Calculus BC exam by the end of 8th grade, without spending any extra time doing math. Highly gifted kids can reach that point in elementary school (we've had multiple such instances).
Johannes@usutav

Forcing kids to vegetate for 12 years when they could play the entire curriculum like an RPG tree at their own pace is by far the greatest instance of child abuse we've passively accepted as ordinary.

Chunky, big legs, inappropriate body for skating, extremely mid as a skater. Would have never won if Russians were competing. Charismatic and has great personality and maybe should become a singer. (I expect my olympians to be the best in the world, I don’t care about their personalities )
