@AirPowerHistory @ArmouredCarrier If the image is public domain you should be fine to use it. The only complication is that sometimes a commercial archive has the only copy, so you end up paying them not for the reproduction rights (even if they say otherwise), but for supplying a hi quality copy of the image.

@ArmouredCarrier That's fine, but they still need to prove that the example used is their version, not the one held by the organisation that created it.

Some copyright enforcement companies are beyond the pale, especially when they can't prove infringement. Dealing with one example where I have used an image created by the US DoD, therefore, in the public domain. They claim Reuters own the licence for the image. How?

In this book I am building on the work of other historians such as @NickHewitt4 whose excellent Coastal Convoys 1939-45 provides the full overview of the multi-faceted German effort against Britain's coastal trade. This book is about the S-Boat threat and its negation 1940-45.

Chris does go into the matter at length in...

@JonathanBoff I'm relieved to hear you say that, I was starting to think it was just me ... Planning my first trip to NARA next month and after a day navigating their website my head is just about ready to explode.

Anyone who has read my Churchill and the Dardanelles will, of course, realize my great debt to @prior_robin's groundbreaking book Churchill's World Crisis as History, which makes the praise especially gratifying.

Absolutely thrilled by the new review from Robin Prior. "I thoroughly recommend this excellent book to anyone interested in the First World War. It is essential, with a capital E, reading and a delight to review." Thank you, @prior_robin !! tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10…

Other favorite take-aways: "Bell does a fine job in investigating this question in a forensic examination of the sources that we have come to expect from him." "lucid and penetrating" "highly original" "fascinating discussion"
