My most recent experiment in which we pay referees at a medical journal is featured in Nature. Expensive with only modest impact; it’s unlikely to fix the referees shortage. But, that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t do it. nature.com/articles/d4158…

Two journals tried paying peer reviewers and found increased acceptance, earlier reports, and no change in quality. WHAT A SURPRISE!

@ethanbdm Big (relative) tax hikes on businesses and high earners who can easily leave. Particularly at the state or province level. Might get away with high taxes on natural resource profits, but less so on your doctors and tech entrepreneurs where attraction and retention are issues

@smsaideman @ethanbdm If the tests are well designed and broadly cover the curriculum, then teaching to the test means teaching the curriculum. Might want to change the curriculum or the way tests are administered. But, I don’t buy the idea that accountability & incentives in schools never works

@DGBassani Despite my skepticism around the claim that not reopening (at a regional level) schools was the right decision, I do appreciate your push for the province to take the necessary steps to ensure we can reopen schools in the fall

@DGBassani In your modelling, how much would regionalized school reopening increase transmission/ICU/deaths? In places like Toronto vs Kingston? My understanding is that regionalized (not blanket) school reopening can be very low-risk and comes with substantial mental heath benefits, etc

@UtilitiesKngstn Back on on Churchill/College as well. Upside of all of this is that @UtilitiesKngstn now knows that its reporting and public information system doesn’t work and can’t handle a big outage.

Crews are investigating a large power outage in central Kingston, impacting approximately 10,000 customers. The cause and ETR are currently unknown and we will provide more information once updates are available. #ygk

Even if schools are not themselves major vectors, there are places which need a more full lockdown like, right now. How have we let bars and indoor dining be open and are not focused on schools? Where are the resources? I cannot see an end, or solutions. I'm sad. (2/2)

@Slate It’s not so simple. Many businesses rely on the students for their economic survival. Some groups may prefer to reduce risks, while others know they can’t survive without them. google.com/amp/s/www.nyti…

A wide range of individuals and organizations can and should take preemptive legal action, suing colleges on the grounds that reopened campuses threaten the public good. slate.trib.al/3tiNYGS

He messes up the joke because he is basically saying “you only think that because you, unlike me, are a white woman.” Or, it could be suggesting that the rest of America is abandoning white women to carry out the fight on their own. I doubt either is his point.

Loan Ranger says to Tonto, “We’re in trouble. Probably wont make it.” Tonto replies “What do you mean ‘we’, white man?” (or ‘Kemo Sabe’ or ‘pale face’). It’s racist, as some argue, if playing on stereotype that Native Americans are loyal only when convenient.

I keep checking twitter to see if @paulkrugman has apologized to @asymmetricinfo yet for the jumbled use of a 75 year old joke that is perhaps both racist and sexist... It goes like this: Lone Ranger and Tonto find themselves surrounded by dozens of Native American warriors
Paul Krugman@paulkrugman

What do you mean "we", white woman? Seriously, "America" hasn't given up on fighting Covid-19; Cuomo's NY, Murphy's NJ, Whitmer's MI haven't given up. It's *Republicans* who have given up. washingtonpost.com/opinions/we-ca…

Mass support for Trump in 2016 was in spite of not because of his racism. They wanted to drain the swamp & mix things up. But he doubled down on racism as it went out of style & he brought corruption to new level. Wonder why only 6200 showed up in Tulsa? twitter.com/i/events/12744…
