@Afinetheorem Classic tension b/w identity-blind vs. identity-conscious approaches to addressing inequality and/or inequity. Reasonable arguments for both, given diverse values & behavioral assumptions -- e.g., debates on algorithms that omit/include identity variables.

Mentality is "will we have more equality by hiding factors used for unequal treatment, or by making them *more* salient". Seems clear to me that on conference nametags and all else, former is better. But I realize that this old-school liberal idea is fighting a rear guard action!

Hot take on "should you network with the Fancy Profs Only at conference." There's an old-school liberal equality vs progressive identity battle here. To me, solution obvious: nametages should just have names, nothing else. I suggested this to NBER, was told "people disagree!" 1/3

I just sat through a needlessly harsh seminar. If we can all remind ourselves that the tongue is like a sharp knife, it can kill without drawing blood, perhaps we can show a bit more compassion in seminars.
