Happy to see the publication of this volume on the legal dimension of European sovereignty, which I co-edited with Peter-Christian Müller-Graff, Jean-Philippe Rageade and Viktor Vadász, in addition to contributing a chapter of my own on EU fiscal policy. link.springer.com/book/10.1007/9…

The audacity of Hungary's government is staggering. They are completely dependent on EU money as a major net recipient, yet they constantly undermine European security from within. We cannot keep funding a government that actively acts against our interests

Ursula von der Leyen: We're vulnerable because we're dependent on the global fossil fuel price volatility. Clean technologies are low-carbon energy sources like nuclear and renewables. The more renewables and nuclear you have, the lower the prices because they're homegrown and not volatile. The more gas as an energy source you have, the higher the prices and volatility.

That the Kremlin and USG are both interfering in Hungary to get the corrupt and divisive Orban govt reelected should serve as a warning. Trump and Putin are intent on weakening European unity and support for Ukraine. British, French and German elections will be targeted likewise.

God help us. This is disgraceful language coming from a Christian, or anyone with a soul. It was just as wrong to celebrate the death of Charlie Kirk as it is to celebrate that of Robert Mueller. May they rest in peace. And may we never forget that Jesus's message is about mercy.

Jay Nordlinger saw it coming. His article laid out the architecture. Now comes the confirmation: JD Vance is flying to Budapest to campaign for Orbán. Washington and Moscow, same direction, same result. This is no longer subtext. It is policy. Which is exactly why European leaders and NATO allies need to stop whispering and start speaking on the record. Publicly. By name. The American vice president is actively working to keep a Kremlin-aligned government in power inside a NATO member state. That sentence should be causing emergency sessions, not diplomatic silence. Nordlinger wrote the diagnosis. Europe needs to find its voice before the patient is gone. Gandalv / @Microinteracti1

Since this article of mine was written, it has been announced that Vice President JD Vance will go to Hungary to campaign for Orbán. It is an all-out effort, from both Washington and Moscow. To say this is a curious coalition is to say the least. It is the new shape of the world.

Hungary immediately leaks all EU talks to Moscow. Sijjarto “reported” directly to Lavrov about the EU meetings, - The Washington Post. According to the newspaper, the Hungarian Foreign Minister called Moscow directly during the EU meetings and relayed details of the discussions to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. Sources say this communication allowed Russia to stay informed about the internal discussions of the European Union. Sijjarto himself has not commented on the situation. However, he has visited Moscow several times since 2022 and met with the Russian leadership.

Finnish MEP Aura Salla calls for urgent EU action to bypass Hungary’s vetoes and secure support for Ukraine. She urges limiting Hungary’s influence, expanding majority voting, and even preparing a mechanism to remove countries that repeatedly violate EU values.

In all the coverage of Trump’s tirades about Europeans it should be noted that they are dealing with a much longer, harder, bigger and more consequential war in their own backyard, in Ukraine – a war that they didn’t choose, and one that Trump’s war on Iran has made worse by enriching Russia.

This was the first time the leader of Spain and the leader of Germany met since the latter insulted the former by not defending him in the Oval Office. Sanchez strode right up to confront 🇩🇪Merz, who apparently didn't call the 🇪🇸PM after the Oval Office incident because he 'had the wrong phone number'. The conversation looked tense, even if there were smiles initially. In the background was Irish leader Micheál Martin, who could have given Merz some lessons on how to defend your fellow Europeans to Trump. Earlier in the week on St Patricks Day he defended 🇬🇧PM Keir Starmer while in the Oval Office, after Trump again attacked the British prime minister. It's hard to imagine that Starmer would have done the same for Martin. Some of the leaders of Europe's smaller countries may have something to teach the leaders of Europe's large countries about dignity, self-respect and European solidarity.

Former President of Ireland Mary Robinson says we can't have "double standards" with the international rule of law. She compares the criticism of Putin invading Ukraine with the U.S. and Israel's strike on Iran, which she says very few countries have spoken explicitly about it.

Ursula von der Leyen: The €90 billion loan for Ukraine was approved by the EC in December, on condition that 3 countries wouldn't participate. The condition has been met. The loan remains blocked because one leader isn't honoring his word. We will deliver, one way or the other.

❗️The EU summit failed to lift the veto on the 20th sanctions package against Russia and plans to allocate a €90 billion loan to Kyiv. The document was supported by 25 of the 27 EU member states - all except Hungary and Slovakia. Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever stated before the summit that the EU has a "Plan B" in case Orbán blocks aid to Ukraine – but he said disclosing details publicly would be "unwise." It is reported that European leaders spent a lot of time trying to persuade PMs Orbán and Fico to change their minds.

We remain resolute. This morning in the Mediterranean, the French Navy intercepted and boarded another vessel from the shadow fleet, the Deyna. The war involving Iran will not deflect France from its support for Ukraine, where Russia’s war of aggression continues unabated. These vessels, which evade international sanctions and violate the law of the sea, are profiteers of war. They line their pockets while helping finance Russia’s war effort. We will not allow it.
