@brannoningram Why do *articles* ever use endnotes rather than footnotes? Actually, the worst is an edited collection with all the notes for every essay at the end of the volume.

When did endnotes instead of footnotes become the overwhelming norm in academic publishing? I don't want to keep flipping back and forth between what I'm reading and the end of the book. I want to see the references at the bottom of the page.

@jongeeting From what I'm reading about the whole Silverliner mess, I probably rode in one of those cars from the Lehigh Valley to Philly with my Girl Scout troop in the mid 1970s to see the Liberty Bell.

A lot of good has been done with this too, but some of these choices man! They essentially prevented the return of Philly-Lehigh Valley rail service and it really sucks

Gonna start a Trails to Rails Conservancy to get back a lot of this transit capacity

@CharlotteERosen @melnickjeffrey1 Have you checked your undergrad institution on alumni access? You might be surprised. My undergrad alma mater, Smith College, provides JSTOR access for alums, e.g. Also happens to be one of those places that designates people as visiting researchers for access to e-resources.

@melnickjeffrey1 sadly was told no re: the alumni access but am figuring out some other options along the lines of what you outlined above... !

@ProfDuff Hey, whenever I tell people who are visiting Philly they should go to PAFA, they are confused, like they think I'm talking about PMA. You should puff PAFA, especially their 19th-century collections in that glorious 19th century confection of a building.

today I walked around $30 billion dollars worth of 19th century impressionist art alone (since everyone in philly was watching the eagles game) and had a $2 Chinese steamed bun for dinner :)

It's really been something knowing I need to go on the academic job market because things aren't financially awesome at my university only to discover the academic job market is absolutely terrible this year.

@vjoshuaadams It leads grad school applicants in the wrong direction. I tell students to think of it more as an intellectual autobiography.

Woodland Presbyterian Church at 42nd & Pine in Spruce Hill received zoning permits to be converted into 27 dwelling units. No details as of yet, but we are glad to see this spot repurposed. This is a contributing building within the newish Southeast Spruce Hill historic district.

@jongeeting So are Silverliner IV trains the standard on most lines? Haven't lived in the region since the late 90s but am moving back soon. I remember the Main Line (R5) trains being different from the then R3 I rode.

@offbeatorbit Good percale sheets last forever. I have 25 year old sheets.

By the way I have terrible news: high quality percale cotton bedding that costs more money than you would ideally spend on bedding is worth every fucking penny. A true investment. Especially if you’re a sweaty sleeper. I bought the LL Bean set and my life is different now.
