As the #Ebola response continues, @WHO and partners are working alongside the Government of DRC to scale up infection prevention and control measures, a critical pillar of the response. This includes strengthening health facilities and building the infection prevention and control skills of frontline health workers to protect patients, communities and themselves. These efforts are vital to saving lives, reducing transmission and bringing us closer to ending this outbreak while leaving behind stronger, more resilient health systems.

.@WHO has provided clinical care and close monitoring to a second U.S. citizen —a humanitarian worker— in eastern #DRC’s Ituri provincial capital of Bunia who has been confirmed with Ebola Bundibugyo virus disease. The patient has been safely transferred to Germany for continued follow-up care. As the outbreak escalates, an accelerated response from local, national, and international partners is urgently needed. WHO is working intensively under the government’s leadership and with @AfricaCDC to bring the outbreak under control as rapidly as possible. As infections among response personnel are not unexpected in an outbreak of this scale, protecting frontline responders must remain a top priority. We are deeply grateful for the courage and commitment of all health workers working to end this outbreak. WHO wishes all patients being treated for Ebola to recover swiftly and will continue supporting communities and responders across the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Governments, health workers and partners are working together in this week's synchronized #Polio vaccination campaign across Cameroon and Niger to protect nearly 15 million children. We can only stop polio through coordinated action and by reaching every child. #EndPolio
WHO African Region@WHOAFRO

Synchronized #Polio vaccination campaigns across Cameroon🇨🇲 and Niger🇳🇪 this week demonstrate the power of coordinated action to protect 15 million children. While neither country has reported a poliovirus case for over a year, transmission continues in neighbouring countries, placing the Lake Chad Basin and the wider African Region at risk until polio is eradicated everywhere. Together, we can #EndPolio.

As we intensify efforts to bring the #Ebola outbreak in the DRC under control, @WHO is working with community volunteers at Kigonze Camp to strengthen Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) skills through hands-on simulation exercises. Following three days of intensive training, participants are mastering the vital protocols for the safe donning and doffing of personal protective equipment (PPE) and home disinfection, enabling them to respond safely and effectively whenever the need arises. WHO remains committed to supporting communities with the knowledge, tools, and expertise they need to protect themselves and interrupt transmission.

Cervical cancer is highly preventable. Yet limited access to prevention, screening and treatment causes 90% of deaths in low- and middle-income countries. During my recent visit to Zimbabwe, @WHO handed over cervical cancer screening equipment to improve diagnosis. When detected early, women have a better chance of treatment and cure.

Honoured to join the #SADC meeting of Ministers of Finance and Health at a pivotal moment, as countries work to sustain health investments amid shrinking global financing. Close collaboration between Ministries of Health and Ministries of Finance is essential. Health ministries understand where the needs are greatest. Finance ministries make sustainable investment possible. Together, they can protect essential health services while building stronger, more resilient health systems. Health policy and economic policy cannot be separated. Investing in health strengthens the workforce, boosts productivity and drives economic growth.

Pleased to meet with @UNZimbabwe Resident Coordinator Rosemary Kalapurakal and heads of @UN Agencies to strengthen collaboration in support of country-led health priorities. Today, we face a new reality with development assistance declining and fiscal pressures rising. This transition presents risks, but it also presents an opportunity. Governments must lead, but partners have important roles to play. @WHO remains committed to working with the UN family and partners to improve the health of the people of our region.
