@FautMonica @Repro_Fertility @Elango1094 I'd agree @FautMonica but it's permissable to retrieve and use gametes in some countries e.g. some Australian states permit posthumous gamete retrieval because it's governed by the law on organ donation. But there is legal ambiguity and varied practice across the globe #RAFjc

@Profgljones @Repro_Fertility @Elango1094 The quick answer is NO. Just as organ or tissue donations are not made without consent, this situation would follow the same principle. However, this question could indeed pave the way for a new ethical discussion.

@FautMonica Sometimes it's argued that FP should not be offered to any #cancerpatient with a poor prognosis because any resultant child will be harmed by only having one parent. We @profdicanderson @am_folan @drbobphillips @ProfJonIves are not convinced by this. What do others think? #RAFjc

Cancer treatments can result in loss of fertility in some patients.

As capacity is person and decision specific though, it should not be assumed that all #cancerpatients with a poor prognosis are not capable of making autonomous, informed FP decisions #RAFJC.

@Repro_Fertility Yes #cancerpatients with a poor prognosis report benefits to pursuing #fertilitypreservation other than having a possible parenting experience e.g. the hope FP gives, fulfilling an imagined future, gifting, leaving a genetic legacy. Could there be other benefits though? #RAFjc

What about poor prognosis #cancerpatients, those who have little chance of survival? Can they get the benefits of #fertilitypreservation? Is it possible to resort to posthumous assisted reproduction with their chosen partner?

🤔Did you know that #cancerpatients report that one of the most distressing side effects of chemotherapy is fertility loss? International guidelines recommend that healthcare teams discuss with patients their fertility future after cancer treatment.
