I put three easy solutions on the table for David Eby to fix the short term rental situation in Kelowna. He chose none of the above. #bcpoli

We are living proof that Eby will NOT go to the wall for private property rights. We are still fighting him in court over 2 years later, for taking individual citizens property rights, in favour of international hotel chains. He never even SPOKE to us. Now his words "We have to go to the wall to defend those private properties....People's homes and businesses are not bargaining chips” are hollow. We are here David, come talk to us, show us what you mean. Actions speak louder than words. @Dave_Eby @KahlonRav @christineeboyle @bcndp @Adam_Stirling @CBCNews @CityOfVictoria @timescolonist @gavindew

@gavindew The people complaining about Airbnb don’t realize how much the @bchotelassoc was responsible for anti Airbnb legislation. This monopoly the @bcndp gave them means travel in bc is for the very rich only now. Check hotel prices

Kelowna has done everything the NDP asked on housing. Vacancy is at a 20 year high. But the NDP is still making us wait another year to opt out of their one-size-fits-all short term rental rules. What message does that send to other municipalities? #bcpoli

@christineeboyle You need to read the file @christineeboyle instead of parroting your predecessor. Do you know about the court case the citizens of BC are still fighting against @KahlonRav s overreaching STR legislation? Have you read the stats on the lack of affordable housing gained?

This could threaten thousands of long-term renters and encourage bad faith evictions before next year’s FIFA World Cup.   Rents are down 10% partly because of these STR rules, but the BC Conservatives are trying to weaken and support repealing them entirely.   We won't let them.

Thank you to Gavin Dew for talking sense. The @bcndp continues to spread misinformation about the outcome of the short term rental ban. Overlooking the real cost to homeowners, travellers and tourism, trying to equate it to affordable housing gains. We see you @christineeboyle. @Dave_Eby @KahlonRav @gavindew

MLA Airbnb? “MLAs from all parties quietly voted this week to let themselves rent out rooms in their taxpayer-funded Victoria condos—to each other. The move clears the way to double dip on housing allowances to the tune of almost $52,000 annually” biv.com/news/commentar…

New: View Royal Mayor Torches 🔥 NDP Government during six minute speech while announcing he will not run again in 2026. View Royal Mayor Sid Tobias announced to colleagues Oct 14th last week that he will not be running for reelection in 2026 before he went on to say that while View Royal had seen progress with other municipalities and the federal government, relations with the provincial government were at a “historic low,” and that he believed NDP provincial housing policy had been “captured” by industry interests. Referencing Barack Obama’s warnings about declines in democracy, Mayor Tobias cited municipalities being forced to sign non-disclosure agreements to discuss concerns about housing policy with the province, arguing that should not be happening in a democracy. The mayor told colleagues he believes a new NDP legislative change to parking requirements in small scale builds will cause cars to spill out onto the streets of the municipality, many of which are without sidewalks, putting children, seniors, and people with mobility issues at risk. The whole speech lasts about six minutes and I’ve reproduced the whole thing here so people can listen and make up their own minds. View Royal is represented exclusively by BC NDP MLAs (awkward). This is pretty potent stuff! #yyj

Eby is going against everyone’s wishes again. Not allowing owners to rent out their rooms or suites for FIFA is fully siding with the BC Hotel Association who have lobbied against vacation rentals by owners for years. There is NO legitimate reason to disallow this. He’s sending money to international hotel chains period.

Misguided city councillors, thinking they were championing the poor like Robin Hood, shut down mom and pop owned vacation rentals by owners. In fact they became the thieves in cases like this. Reneging on zoning prviously granted to owners who have now lost their incomes.

The negative fall out continues, thanks to the short term rental ban on formerly legally zoned and licensed suites offered by owners in downtown Victoria “Emily Carr herself rented rooms here to support her art,” said Willis, who retired as a B.C. Ferries second officer after 35 years at the helm of various vessels. He’s currently an operator of the Little Harbour Ferries and a self-proclaimed tourism booster for the region. “Short-term rentals have been a part of this house’s story since the beginning,” Willis said. “We’re simply asking the province to help us carry on her legacy.” @CityOfVictoria @KahlonRav @bcndp @Dave_Eby @GraceALore @JohnRustad4BC @AzimAJiwani @BruceBanman @linda_hepner @ahappywarrior @JValeriote74 @Kristina4B @MarianneAlto @mattdellok @rightstoday @DaveThompsonVIC @CHEK_News @Adam_Stirling @GlobalBC @victoriabuzzes @cbcnewsbc @timescolonist @ocean985 @CTVNewsRob @VaughnPalmer

Let me try and explain what growing an economy in simple terms is. I bought a business in Victoria, it is a small Micro loft 320 Sq ft , overlooking the inner harbour. It was zoned to be able to rent out as a short term rental. I paid my property taxes, license fees . It was a thriving business, supplementing my retirement income. I hired a manager to look after it and was responsible for the bookings and running the business. She in turn hired cleaners and maintenance people. I paid GST and provincial taxes. Tourists from all over the world came and stayed in our unit. We recommend all kinds of activities for them to enjoy, in fact we arranged with local businesses discounts for our guests. Then one day without any warning, the Provincial Government took our rights away, apparently because a housing and affordable rentals shortage . What the government didn’t take into account, these units were too small for families or even couples to rent over a long period. I business suffered and suddenly we were unable to rent our unit The government demonized us, saying that we were greedy landlords, that was the furthest from the truth, all we were trying to do was supplement our income as we are retired. So when the government uses phrases as “ we are the engine for the economy. This is such nonsense. We have been robbed of our investment @Dave_Eby @JohnRustad4BC @bcndp @koicows @Conservative_BC @Adam_Stirling @PropertyRtsBC

Once the foot traffic is gone the neighborhood gets less safe. The loss of the 634 legal vacation rentals by owners in the core was a huge mistake. Those units kept tourists in the core and they were zoned by the city exactly for that use. The misguided moral crusaders at city council completely blew this

There are so many new businesses opening downtown Victoria! After @lululemon expanded to a new flagship store downtown, my favorite BC clothing store @duerperformance just took over the space. I picked up two great items today. Check it out! #yyj

If 10 stores close but 5 new ones open- is that a downtown thriving or spiraling in decline? Further: moving blocks away to an area less afflicted - that isn’t a vote of confidence in the core.

TL:DR In 2019, Victoria council was very worried about gentrification of the 900 Block of Pandora. It worried about displacing the homeless people there in 2019 and sent a development proposal back to staff because more consultation was needed. Don't let the politicians trick everybody into forgetting. Victoria became what it is because of deliberate policy choices. #yyj

Reminder: Victoria Council likes to say Council isn't to blame for the situation in the 900 Block of Pandora, but when private developers tried to build housing on that block in 2018 what did we hear? Multiple voices around the table were worried the homeless might be displaced... The project never did go forward, the city ended up buying the land instead, and now it's going to be a BC Housing site... Municipal decisions mattered. A lot. #yyj

Nov 23, 2018 -- 926 Pandora Avenue #bcpoli #yyj "Helps noted that the below-market rental units being proposed wouldn’t meet the definition of “affordable” that the three Together Victoria councillors are proposing. They would define affordable as a price that does not exceed 30 per cent of the gross annual household income for moderate-income, low-to-moderate, low and very-low-income households." timescolonist.com/real-estate-ne…
