@onionfuture @ThatchEffendi I'm reading the interview diagonally, don't see Oshii mentioned alongside Alphaville and Tsukamoto but that's another one I instinctively link to. Also slander to Canadian DPs in there lmao.

@PsyOp_Langley @ThatchEffendi Yeah the different acting tempos / styles don’t work that well - Rollins and ice T on completely different tempos for example. But the really pushed B&W works as a kind of distancing effect that makes you re approach it

@jetskitosway2 Well you got the gist of it. Lin has to castrate themselves to unlock the power of the scroll. She becomes a woman in ways that both are kinda progressive but also retrograde.

like Brigette Lin is a eunuch and Jet Li falls in love with her but she’s actually evil or something? the subtitles were a little unclear but the action goes absolutely crazy, I need to rewatch soon

@onionfuture @ThatchEffendi Thank much obliged. Longo directing this was surprising to begin with. Interesting film but deffo much less than the sum of its parts ("I'll have Lundgren... and Kitano").

For movies to be great, they have to be actual violations of the norms and practices that now govern movie making everywhere in the capitalist and would-be capitalist world—which is to say, everywhere. Susan Sontag

@MargBarCinema I don't know how solid that is but talk that the Body Snatchers from the 90s by Ferrara and one of the Singer's X-Men were both completed by their respective DP.

@staticbluebat Someone need to take that "elevated" behind the shed, seriously. Yeah some films are smarter than others, including in horror, but making that a label is only leading to bad things.

@BadFilmTakes1 Film shoots are pretty high stress, people packed, so tempers will flare. But like someone as Kechiche got leeway but at one point running long, numerous takes & days, being abusive to distributors, to actors and shortchanging crew on wages... Is the art worth it ?

@BadFilmTakes1 I'm of a two minds about that. Everyone has bad days or bad work and to an extent a film crew will generally benefit from hierarchy. On the other hand there's been a tendency to imply directors being assholes is part of the genius and it often is not.

There's this myth out there of "the filmmaker who is nice to everyone." David Lynch sometimes yelled at his producers and had depressive episodes when things weren't going his way. I'm not justifying it, but "being nice" ultimately doesn't matter if the film falls apart.
Andreas Samuelson@andy_samuelson

I worked as a street guard on this scene. Dozens of pissed of people not being able to get to work. Director didn’t smile or say good morning once to any of the crew receiving complaints about his production.

@sIeepawaycamp I've seen this angle and I'm not so sure because it's not really a talking point I every remember being brought up before (I'm sure it has, not commonly though), PTA was celebrated from the get go ? The zeitgeist being skeptical of anything sold as genuine, I fear.

one thing about great horror films directed by young talent is that bitter older people will say it was actually from the mind of someone older than them bc they can't fathom that level of drive & success at that age

@LuisGirlsmoan @AdriCaporusso Not to say it is easy but the biggest hurdle is probably getting funded and distributed if you want to turn pro. Everyone can make personal projects from an early age now.

@AdriCaporusso I think people just really overestimate how hard it is to direct a movie. It seems like it’s more of a stressful job that needs good communication to work through challenges. Rather than being difficult

The theory that Obsession/Backrooms were ghost directed is so funny because what exactly do they gain from that? You think A24 and Focus (who didn’t even have produce the movie btw) just really needed these niche YouTuber names for marketing?

@ambr0ga @ChaseMit @dabongohead Unrelated but fair, yeah, most likely. I think the most difficult part of those jobs (and why people generally are older to direct a first feature) is getting yourself -hopefully- into the circuit for funding and exploitation.

@ChaseMit @dabongohead @PsyOp_Langley while i disagree with the whole shadow director narrative and im very much inspired by the story of how the film was made and the story of youtube to theater, to act like he would have the same difficulty getting a movie made that i would is a little disingenuous but unconnected

obsession was the most amazing movie ive ever seen but the rumor that the director acted as kind of a "face" for the film while a more experienced director was behind the scenes actually putting the work in kinda tainted the experience for me

Extremely predictable that AI boosters, who for years now have been telling everyone to shut up and accept their product bc we're not 'experts', took a glance at a 150 pp document engaging with a 2000 year history of thought and practice and are calling it superficial.

@MMaloneGOAT @dabongohead I'm gonna steal a joke here but "if Blumhouse had a secret ghost director to do bangers why don't they have him on more films ?" But yeah they only came later in to distribute it.

@PsyOp_Langley @dabongohead The best part of the theory, to me, is that Blumhouse is responsible for it. They didn’t even pick up the movie until after it screened at festivals! How could they have a ghost director for a movie they didn’t produce

@PRabbitholes It's not very high brow and it has its issues but I always thought it was by far the best Punisher adaptation on screen.

@PRabbitholes I seem to remember it got quite a bit of backlash (including but not limited to having a woman directing) and I'm pleased it's being more fairly evaluated. I think at the time people balked at the cinematography and the parkour ?

I was told Punisher: War Zone was dogshit for like 20 years but I just watched it and that shit was more entertaining and more pleasing to look at than the last 6-8 years of Marvel movies and shows minimum

@Caol_MacCormaic ...Backrooms, since the marketing obviously insist on the director being 20 and breaking some sort or abritrary box office mark.

@Caol_MacCormaic It's just a funny new type of story because what would exactly be the benefit of having random guy as a "face" instead of whoever is ghost directing (that would be a more known quantity and supposedly reliable ?) I don't think it makes sense either but I vaguely see it for...

re: ghost directing discourse, I think a lot of people struggle with the reality that they have aged out of being a wunderkind. if you were the type of person to make a movie at 26, you would've done it. the good news is you can make a movie at 36, or 46, or whenever.

@dabongohead PTA did Magnolia at 28 ? Apparently trained as an actor, did YT sketch comedy and stuff ? Plenty of people jumping from YT to being hired to direct, really nothing exceptional about the situation.
